Laura Elizabeth Harris Hales was an American author, historian, and podcaster. She was born on August 12, 1967, and passed away on April 13, 2022. Her work focused on the history, theology, and culture of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), of which she was a lifelong member. Hales passed away on April 13, 2022. BIOGRAPHY:

Hales is the editor of a collection of articles titled A Reason for Faith: Navigating LDS Doctrine and Church History. These writings present a nuanced context for and solutions to questions regarding problematic portions of the history of the LDS Church. In an interview with the church’s website From the Desk, in which she was asked about the practice of polygamy during the time period of the Later Day Saints, she stated, “There is a need for a broader discussion of 19th-century Latter-day Saint women who cry out for identities beyond a wife number or an age.” “There isn’t much progress that can be made in resolving the silences of women’s history if we simply look at their lives through the lens of their ties to their spouses. Hales launched the podcast Latter-day Saint Perspectives in 2016, with the goal of investigating “Latter-day Saint history, doctrine, and culture.

The show does so by conducting interviews with authors, professors, and historians. Interviews with Fiona Givens, Kate Holbrook, Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye, and Patrick Q. Mason can be found in various episodes of the show. She held the position of executive director as of the year 2021 and was a frequent host on the podcast.  In May of 2021, Hales made the announcement that the podcast will not be receiving any new broadcasts and that he would instead be focusing his efforts on other projects.

Hales was a devout follower of the Latter-Day Saint religion. She wed Brian Dursteler in 1988, and the couple remained together until they divorced in 2005; during their marriage, they were blessed with five children. In 2013, she tied the knot with Brian C. Hales, and between the two of them and their respective families, the couple eventually became parents to nine children. On April 13, 2022, when she was 54 years old, Hales passed away at her home in Kaysville, Utah, from pancreatic cancer.
