Ryan Allen Reeves, better known as Ryback, was born on November 10, 1981, in Las Vegas, Nevada to a middle-class Polish family. When he was eight years old, he had the opportunity to ring the bell during a World Wrestling Federation event, and that experience inspired his interest in bodybuilding and wrestling. Around the same time, he began taking an interest in professional wrestling.
At the age of 12, he had another opportunity to ring the bell at a WWF event, which further piqued his curiosity. He began self-training and weightlifting at a very young age, logging long hours in the gym. After gaining more weight and receiving the nickname “gorilla” from his buddies a few years later, Ryback eventually incorporated the term “silverback” into his WWE ring moniker.
As the school year progressed, Ryback became a regular on the various athletic teams. His favorite sport was baseball, but he tried many others. He was a baseball star at both Palo Verde High and Western High, where he studied. He considered trying out for the major leagues because he was so talented.
Following his graduation, Ryback enrolled in the Community College of Southern Nevada. He returned to play baseball for the school, but an injury in his freshman year forced him to sit out the following two years. After the catastrophe, he decided to enroll at the University of Nevada in the fitness management program.
After finishing college, he began working at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino and continued training to prepare himself for a career in professional wrestling. In 2004, he was one of 50 hopefuls on WWE’s ‘Tough Enough’ after sending in a one-minute clip to try out for the show. Securing a spot on ‘Tough Enough’ was the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame. He was one of eight finalists to appear on SmackDown, and despite being injured and unwell in the very first week of his entry, he was the last competitor to be voted off. The showrunners were impressed enough to offer him a developmental contract. Ryback trained in Georgia for a while before he made his way to the WWE developmental territories under his real name, Ryback Allen Reeves, a professional wrestler.
Ryback made appearances in Deep South Wrestling and Ohio Valley Wrestling during the first few months of his developmental contract. He was suspended for a month in 2006 after failing a WWE drug test. Taking a supplement to help with muscle gain was something he admitted to doing, but it wasn’t against the law back then. Somehow, just a few weeks later, the substance was outlawed.
After that, he traveled to compete in a few matches at the Ohio Valley Wrestling. After taking some time off from OVW in 2008, he came back under the ring name Ryback. He won the OVW Heavyweight Title by defeating Anthony Bravado in October of that year. Even though he was able to successfully defend his championship against Anthony once earlier in the month, he ultimately lost it later that month.
After that, Ryback joined the Florida Championship Wrestling and promptly lost his first two tag team battles. He was one of eight ECW wrestlers announced for WWE’s new show “NXT” in February 2010. After a losing start in tag team action, he debuted as a singles competitor in April 2010 against Daniel Bryan and won. Ryback and several of his “NXT” coworkers interrupted a bout between John Cena and CM Punk on the June 7 episode of RAW to introduce themselves as the new group The Nexus.
The seven-on-seven elimination battle at SummerSlam 2010 was the climax of the storyline between Team WWE and The Nexus. The Nexus was defeated, and Ryback fractured his ankle in August, keeping him out of wrestling for an entire year. He returned in April 2012, this time on SmackDown, and he won as a greater combatant than before. In August 2012, he made his comeback to Raw and immediately became involved in a feud with Jinder Mahal. However, despite Ryback’s success in overcoming Mahal on multiple occasions, Jinder’s craftiness prevented him from ever achieving a decisive victory. This all started in September when he decided to target the current WWE Champion, CM Punk.
Ryback challenged CM Punk for the title in October’s pay-per-view ‘Hell in a Cell’ match, but he was defeated by Punk. In addition, he sided with John Cena and Sheamus in their fight against The Shield, a wrestling gang that had been unpunished for its terrorization of the industry’s talent. In an “Elimination Chamber” encounter, the Shield prevailed over the three opponents.
