His career has spanned almost three decades. In addition, he has held positions as a manager, color commentator, booker, and creative consultant, primarily for AAA Lucha Libre (AAA). He was also involved in the production of Lucha Underground, where he was supposed to work as a writer and producer, but instead, he ended up playing an on-screen role as Prince Puma’s manager for the entirety of the show’s first season. He was a part of the creation of Lucha Underground. In addition to his career in wrestling, Konnan also dabbles in rapping. To fans in the United States, he is best known for his time spent competing in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as a member of the nWo stable and as a member of The Filthy Animals tag team. Additionally, he established the 3 Live Kru stable for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in the early 2000s. Later, he went on to establish the Latin American Xchange stable for TNA.
In Mexico, Konnan was the very first person to win the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship. He also served as the leader of the Foreign Legion in AAA during the time that they were the most successful stable. Carlos Santiago Espada Moises was born in Konnan in Santiago, Cuba, and he is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent. 1966 was the year that he and his mother moved to Boston. Soon after arriving in Boston, she was introduced to a young private investigator from New York by the name of Richard Ashenoff. He was half Jewish and half Puerto Rican. They wed quickly and raised Carlos together as a married couple. In 1967, the family moved to Carol City, which is located in the southern part of Florida. During the process of formally adopting Carlos, Richard gave his new son the name Charles Ashenoff as his legal name.
By 1976, Ashenoff had gotten into the habit of stealing cars, largely due to the influence of his older friends and neighbors. He got his driver’s license when he was 12 years old, learned how to box, and was an “avid weightlifter.” Before enrolling at Miami Senior High, Ashenoff was kicked out of multiple schools for disciplinary reasons. In 1981, he completed his senior year of high school at Miami Senior a year early. That same year, he was arrested and charged with stealing credit cards and motorcycles while he was still a juvenile. In 1982, not long after he turned 18, Ashenoff was busted for selling drugs and faced adult charges as a result of the incident. He was given the option of going to prison or joining the military as his punishment. He went with the second option and joined the Navy of the United States. After finishing his initial training,
Ashenoff was transferred to San Diego and given a position aboard the USS Cape Cod, a destroyer tender serving in the Pacific Fleet (AD-43). In 1983, he boxed his way to victory in the middleweight division of the California state amateur championship. He intended to compete in the Junior Olympics in boxing, but he injured his shoulder during training. As a result, he was sent to the Middle East after the bombing of the United States Embassy in Beirut on April 18, 1983. His ship was in the Strait of Hormuz at the time of the bombing of the United States Marine barracks and the French paratrooper barracks in Beirut on October 24, 1983. By 1984, the USS Cape Cod had been permanently removed from service in the Persian Gulf.
After completing his service, Ashenoff went back to San Diego and was given an honorable discharge. In San Diego, Konnan met John Roberts. The following information was provided by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter regarding Ashenoff’s beginnings in the professional wrestling industry: On his 24th birthday, Carlos traveled to Tijuana, where he was shown to the dressing area and introduced to Manuel de los Santos, the promoter of the show as well as a wrestler who competed in the main event under the ring name “Kiss.” The moment De los Santos laid eyes on the bodybuilder weighing 215 pounds, he performed the classic “double-take” reaction.
