The Wiggles are a children’s music group from Australia, created in 1991 in Sydney, New South Wales. Anthony Field, Lachlan Gillespie, Simon Pryce, and Emma Watkins have been the core members of the group since 2013. Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Greg Page, and Phillip Wilcher were among the group’s founding members. After their debut album, Wilcher departed the band.

Due to ill health, Page retired in 2006 and was replaced by understudy Sam Moran, although he returned in 2012 to replace Moran. Gillespie, Pryce, and Watkins took over for Cook, Fatt, and Page at the end of 2012. Cook and Fatt kept their shares in the company, and the three of them continued to be involved in the creative and production parts of it. Tsehay Hawkins will take Watkins’ spot after she leaves the group at the end of 2021.

Cook was a member of several bands before meeting Field and Page at Macquarie University, where they were training to become pre-school teachers. Field and Fatt were members of the Australian pop band The Cockroaches in the 1980s, while Cook was a member of several bands before meeting Field and Page. Field sought the help of Cook, Page, and Fatt in 1991 to make an album of children’s music based on early childhood education themes. They began touring to promote the album, and their success was such that they were able to leave their teaching careers and pursue music full-time.

Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus, and Wags the Dog, as well as Captain Feathersword, a human character played by Paul Paddick since 1993, rounded out the group’s act. Later on, Shirley Shawn the Unicorn appeared. They started off with a small group of dancers and eventually expanded into a larger troupe. Since their inception, the group has produced its own DVDs, CDs, and television shows.

After breaking into the American market in the early 2000s, they reached their peak. In January 2021, the band celebrated their 30th anniversary with a song called “We’re All Fruit Salad,” which featured guest performers from many cultural backgrounds and included lyrics about togetherness and acceptance. After receiving backlash during the Black Lives Matter movement, Field indicated a wish to include greater diversity in the band.

Four new members joined the Wiggles in August 2021, with the goal of better portraying contemporary society by embracing cultural and gender diversity. Fruit Salad TV, an exclusive web series starring Evie Ferris, Kelly Hamilton, Tsehay Hawkins, and John Pearce, premiered in September on YouTube.  Hawkins will take Watkins’ spot in the lead line-up after Watkins announced her resignation in October 2021. In November, the extended lineup made their live performance debut as pre-match entertainment for an Australia women’s national soccer team game, and will be followed by a national Australian concert tour in early 2022.

Since their inception, the Wiggles have released new music every year; each summer, they sequestered themselves for a month and created three albums of original children’s music centred on simple concepts familiar to young children and including various musical genres and instruments. They believed that young children needed to be introduced to a song’s topic in the first few lines, hence most of their songs were brief and started with the chorus.

At first, they wrote songs on their own, but eventually collaborated with John Field, trumpet player Dominic Lindsay, and Paddick to write music as a group.Fatt, the only original group member who did not have a degree in early childhood education, preferred to compose music. They composed repetitious pop songs or jingles that were enticing to youngsters, Fatt told reporter Brian McElhiney, who described the group’s songwriting method “a collaborative affair.”

Despite her background as a dancer, Watkins was asked to contribute songs to their albums.  Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty, who participated in a Wiggles video in 2002, told The New York Times that the group’s songs, particularly their percussion sound, “wowed” him. The Wiggles, according to Field, did not have a difficult time transitioning from writing music for an adult rock band to writing music for kids.

“The Wiggles music isn’t that dissimilar to what we performed in the Cockroaches; it’s simply a different subject matter,” Field explained. “The Cockroaches sing about girls and love and such such things, whereas the Wiggles sing about hot potatoes and cold spaghetti.”  The Wiggles, according to Moran, wrote songs that they like and would listen to, then adapted them for children.

They used basic melodies that were easy for youngsters to sing and memorise to approach simple and relocatable issues like food and nutrition, just like teachers would in a pre-school context. The group sung the same 60s-style music as the Cockroaches, but with different lyrics, and they weren’t limited to love songs; they could write about anything that attracted and excited young children, which was pretty much anything.

Nursery rhymes, folk music, and rock songs from the 1950s and 1960s were all influences on the music they wrote and performed. “First and foremost, we’re entertainers,” Page said in an interview.  The Wiggles piqued children’s interest by entertaining them first and then delivering educational ideas to them. According to Field, the group’s “golden rule” was to make its songs and performances “developmentally appropriate and fun.”

Their music, stage shows, television and DVD productions were created “on the assumption that a young child has a short attention span, is curious about a limited number of objects and activities, enjoys having a job to do, and is thrilled by mastering basic movements,” according to The New York Times.  They also valued the intelligence and insight of their audience in terms of entertainment, information, and honesty. Field put it well: “Young children can relate to significant concepts and enjoy being amused as well as participating in it.

If you are direct, inclusive, and positive, they will commit to connecting with you “,  The group realised that putting difficult activities in front of young children is more effective than simply telling them to do it.  They believed that young children were egocentric, thus in their films and TV shows, they peered constantly into the camera and explained every move because they believed that young children needed to be taught what to expect in order to feel comfortable and not left out.
