During his time at American University, he was involved with both the campus television station, known as ATV – American University Television, and the School of International Service, where he earned a degree in International Studies.
Gregory was honored as the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year at the School of International Service in 2005, and he currently serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council. At the age of 18, Gregory got his start in the media industry working as a summer reporter for the KGUN-TV station in Tucson, Arizona. Gregory also held a position with the NBC affiliate in Sacramento, California, known as KCRA-TV. Following the election, Gregory started working for NBC as a journalist at the White House. Because of his coverage of President Bush’s first 100 days in office, the conservative Media Research Center awarded him the title of “Best White House Correspondent.” Gregory served in this capacity up until he was offered a role on Meet the Press in December of 2008.
A baby shower was held for Gregory’s children, and Michael Chertoff, who was appointed by Bush, was there. When George W. Bush was running for president in 2000, NBC put Gregory in charge of covering the press corps covering Bush’s campaign. Gregory was given a nickname by Bush “Gregory was given the nicknames “Dancing Man” and “Stretch” due to his height of 6’5 and his occasional tendency to display his dance talents. Stretch was given this moniker because of his height.
The interactions that Gregory had with Bush’s press secretaries were often heated and, as a result, garnered the attention of the media on multiple occasions. Numerous observers have pointed to these occurrences as evidence of the left-wing bias that exists in the mainstream media and used it to describe Gregory’s reporting. Gregory has been quoted as saying to Howard Kurtz that “it is easy to shift attention against a known whipping boy” and that “I supply material for critics who scream, ‘Aha, they’re out of control. Ana Marie Cox, a columnist for The Daily Beast, wrote on January 23, 2009, that Barack Obama has not yet identified “this administration’s David Gregory.
She used Gregory as a metaphor for a counterpoint in the White House, and she described this figure as one who could be viewed as either Gregory or the White House “stern, focused on current events, and unflinching; alternatively, flashy, shallow, and self-indulgent. Gregory has been wed to Beth Wilkinson, a member of the Methodist faith, since June of the year 2000. Wilkinson is a lawyer who represents four of Hillary Clinton’s closest aides in the FBI’s investigation of the email scandal involving Clinton. He is a former federal prosecutor, general counsel, corporate secretary at Fannie Mae, and executive vice president of Fannie Mae.
Wilkinson is also a corporate secretary. They were acquainted with one another when Gregory was reporting on the explosion in Oklahoma City for a newspaper and Wilkinson was working as an assistant prosecutor on the case. They are parents to three little ones.
