Benjamin Frederick Mankiewicz is a well-known American television personality, political commentator, and film critic. He was born on March 25, 1967, in the United States. He has served as a commentator on shows such as The Young Turks and What the Flick?! in addition to his hosting duties on Turner Classic Movies. Mankiewicz was born in Washington, District of Columbia, to parents Holly Mankiewicz (née Jolley) and Frank Mankiewicz, both of whom were press secretaries.
Mankiewicz is of German and Jewish descent. He is the cousin of screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz as well as filmmaker and television producer Nick Davis. He is also the grandson of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, the grand-nephew of screenwriter, producer, and director Joseph L. Mankiewicz,[ as well as the brother of NBC News reporter Josh Mankiewicz. He received his primary and secondary education at Georgetown Day School, went to Tufts University for his undergraduate studies, and then attended Columbia University for his graduate education.
BIOGRAPHY:
At the beginning of his career, Mankiewicz worked in Charleston, South Carolina, for WCSC-TV, which is affiliated with CBS. He held the positions of reporter and anchor there. In 1998, he started working for WAMI in Miami, Florida, where he eventually became the anchor of The Times, a daily news magazine show that was also the highlight program for the station. The year 2003 marked the beginning of Mankiewicz’s tenure as a host for Turner Classic Movies. When he made his first appearance on TCM, he was the network’s second host ever to be hired in its entire history (Robert Osborne being the first).
As a film critic, Mankiewicz co-hosted the television series At the Movies from 2008 to 2009, which was broadcast on a network that is nationally syndicated. He also co-hosted the online film review show What the Flick?!, which is broadcast on The Young Turks Network. He is the host of “The Plot Thickens,” a TCM original podcast that debuted in April 2020 and chronicles the life and career of renowned director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon, etc.).
In the podcast, he discusses Bogdanovich’s experiences both inside and outside of the film industry. In upcoming episodes of the podcast, additional guests connected in some way to the film industry are planned to be interviewed. After participating in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, his father entered politics immediately following the conflict’s conclusion and went on to hold positions such as press secretary for Senator Robert F. Kennedy and presidential campaign manager for Senator George S. McGovern. His grandfather, who had by that time developed some misgivings about his own line of work, was completely on board with his son’s decision to follow in his footsteps and become a politician.
As a direct consequence of this, Ben was raised in a political setting, away from the influence of Hollywood. He received his education at Tufts University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, both of which he attended after graduating from Georgetown Day School. Mitchell Page was a former star for the Oakland A’s baseball team, and Ben, who was a co-captain of the basketball team at his school, is a huge fan of Page.
Additionally, he is a supporter of singer and musician Bruce Springsteen, and he frequently visits cities across the country to watch the ‘E Street Band’ perform live. Between the years 2005 and 2009, he was married to Contessa Kellogg. On the TCM Cruise in 2013, he eventually tied the knot with Lee Russo. At this time, they call Santa Monica, California home, where they reside with their daughter Josie and three dogs as pets.
