Maria Sharapova, the full name Maria Yuryevna Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russia. She is a Russian tennis player who was one of the game’s top contenders in the early twenty-first century, winning five Grand Slam titles in the process.
Sharapova began playing tennis as a toddler, and in 1993, she drew the notice of Martina Navratilova, a Czech-born American tennis champion who was competing in the same tournament. Following Navratilova’s recommendation, Sharapova and her father relocated to Florida in 1994, where she swiftly obtained a tennis academy scholarship.
She began competing professionally in 2001 when she was 14 years old. 2003 saw her compete in every Grand Slam event, with her best finish coming at Wimbledon, where she advanced to the fourth round of the competition. In that same year, she won her first two Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) titles in Tokyo and Quebec City, marking her professional debut.
In 2004, she won her maiden Grand Slam by defeating Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final, giving her the title of “Miss World.” Sharapova reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the United States Open the following year, becoming the first woman to hold the number one ranking in her professional career. In 2006, she won the latter tournament, and in 2008, she earned her third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, completing the career Grand Slam.
Later in the year, though, Sharapova was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff, an injury that ultimately necessitated surgical intervention. She returned to the court in the middle of 2009 and won multiple WTA titles over the next two seasons, though she was unable to win a Grand Slam title. Sharapova’s finest performance came in 2011 when she lost in the Wimbledon finals.
She did, however, regain her form in 2012, winning the French Open to become only the seventh female player in the Open era to complete a career in Grand Slam by winning the tournament. In the same year, she was also awarded a silver medal at the Olympic Games in London.
In 2013, after a promising start that included a run to the French Open final, where she was defeated by Williams, Sharapova was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury that kept her out for the final six months of the season. She returned to competitive play in 2014, and later that year she captured her fifth Grand Slam title by winning the French Open.
At the Australian Open earlier in the year, Sharapova admitted that she had taken meldonium (marketed as Mildronate), a heart medication that had recently been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited substances. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) barred her from tennis for two years after she failed a drug test caused by meldonium three months after she had taken the medication.
(After she filed an appeal, her suspension was reduced to 15 months.) During the month of April 2017, Sharapova returned to the WTA tour. But she struggled to restore her previous form and was troubled by ailments for the rest of the season. In 2020, she revealed that she will be retiring. Unstoppable: My Life So Far (co-written with Rich Cohen) was published in 2017 and is her autobiography.
