Tony Bennett was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Astoria, Queens, New York, on August 3, 1926. Father John Benedetto Suraci was a grocery store owner who passed away when Tony was ten years old. He grew raised in a family with two older brothers and sisters.
Tony had been singing by the time he was ten years old. He also grew to appreciate beautiful art. He went to the School of Industrial Art in New York City. However, he dropped out of school when he was 16 years old in order to help support his impoverished family.
At first, he worked as an Associated Press copy boy and had a variety of low-wage positions. As time went on, he began appearing as a singing waiter in nightclubs, pubs, and other social gatherings all around the city as well. Billboard reports that Tony Bennett has been married a total of four times in his life.
Patricia Beech and Sandra Grant, his previous wives, divorced him. He had four children from his two marriages, one of whom was singer Antonia Bennett. In 2007, he wed Susan Crow, his third wife.
Benedetto enlisted in the United States Army in November 1944 as World War II came to a close. He performed in the 314th Army Special Services Band while there as Joe Bari, a pseudonym for a singer. Benedetto returned to the United States in 1946 and sang anywhere he could. In 1949, he also released a few records, although none of them were commercially successful.
Soon after, Pearl Bailey, a famous actress, and singer became aware of his abilities and requested that he perform for her as part of an event opening. Despite the fact that Bob Hope had been invited to the concert, he opted to take a chance on Benedetto. Hope renamed Benedetto “Tony Bennett” and arranged for him to be signed to the prestigious Columbia Records.
It wasn’t until later in life that Bennett began to specialize in jazz and blues compositions. The ballad was his debut single “‘Because of You,’ a Mitch Miller-produced track. Miller continued to create Bennett’s early tracks after the song’s commercial breakthrough. “Blue Velvet” by the latter was also a big hit. With “Rags to Riches,” the singer found new success in 1953.
When the Broadway musical ‘Kismet’ opened, its producers invited Bennett to perform “Stranger in Paradise” to promote their products. In the United States and the United Kingdom, the song was a tremendous hit. “Cloud 7” was the title of the singer’s debut long-player record, published in 1955. He followed that up with the album ‘The Beat of My Heart,’ which was released two years later.
Nat Adderley and Herbie Mann, two well-known jazz musicians, are included on this CD. Bennett’s career continued to flourish as rock and roll gained traction in the mid-1950s, with his song “In the Middle of an Island” peaking at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 40. The Count Basie Orchestra hired Bennett later on. In-Person and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings were enormous successes as collaboration recordings.
As well as a self-titled album, the singer-songwriter released the single and album “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” in 1962. The album and the single were both certified gold. He released his debut album, titled ‘I Wanna Be Around,’ the following year. The title track and the single “The Good Life” helped make this album a hit as well. Tony Bennett enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums based on Broadway show tunes during the next few years.
Then, at the behest of Columbia Records’ Clive Davis, he recorded “current” rock songs. However, no one was happy with the outcomes, as seen by the singer’s 1970 album ‘Tony Sings the Great Hits of Today,’ which failed to make any revenue. Bennett decided to start his own record label, Improv, to take matters into his own hands. Together Again, The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album, and What is This Thing Called Love were all issued by this label.
The American performer was unsigned to a record label at the end of the 1970s. As a result, he was able to secure bookings for performances at universities and smaller theatres. ‘The Art of Excellence,’ Bennett’s first chart-topping record since 1972, saw him reunited with Columbia Records in 1986 and re-sign with them. After then, he appeared on a number of programs including “Late Night with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Muppets Tonight,” and “The Simpsons,” just to mention a few.
Bennett performed a number of concerts across the country in 1993. He proceeded to record and released the blockbuster album ‘Astoria: Portrait of the Artist,’ a tribute to Frank Sinatra called ‘Perfectly Frank,’ and a song dedicated to Fred Astaire called ‘Steppin’ Out,’ among other works. He made the audience swoon during his 1994 appearance on ‘MTV Unplugged.’
With his reputation restored by the late 1990s, he went on to perform a slew of gigs each year, both live and on the road, while also recording new music. Additionally, Bennett appeared in a number of guest roles on television and in films, including “Analyze This,” “The Scout,” and “Bruce Almighty.” He published ‘Duets: An American Classic’ in 2006, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart in the United States.
Bennett’s final shows took place two years after the publication of his final album, ‘A Swingin’ Christmas.’ He released ‘Duets II’ in September 2011 and then worked with Amy Winehouse on the song “The two are intertwined. ‘Viva Duets’ was his next album, which came out the following year. In 2014, Bennett made his Israeli debut, performing in Tel Aviv for the first time. He followed that up with ‘The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern,’ which was released a year later.
