Soulja Boy (previously Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em) is an American rapper and record producer who was born DeAndre Cortez Way on July 28, 1990. His first hit, “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 2007.

The song was self-released on the internet, and it went on to become a number one hit in the United States for seven non-consecutive weeks beginning in September 2007. Way was ranked number 18 on Forbes’ list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings of 2010 on August 17th, with earnings of $7 million for the year.

Way made his tracks available on the SoundClick website in November 2005. He created accounts on YouTube and Myspace after receiving favourable feedback on the site.  Unsigned & Still Major: Da Record Before da Album, his debut independent album, was released in March 2007.

Way released “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” in March 2007, which was accompanied by a low-budget video exhibiting the “Crank That” dance. Way met with Mr. Collipark to sign a deal with Interscope Records on May 2, after “Crank That” was released as a single.

By the end of the month, it had gained its first airing, and Way met with Mr. Collipark to sign a deal with Interscope Records. “Crank That” was featured on the television show Entourage on August 12 and topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot RingMasters charts on September 1.

Way was nominated for Best Rap Song at the 50th Grammy Awards with “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” but Kanye West and T-“Good Pain’s Life” won instead.Way’s major label debut album, Souljaboytellem.com, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts on October 2,.

According to reports, the album was made entirely with the FL Studio demo version. While Allmusic gave Souljaboytellem.com a positive review, other publications, including as Entertainment Weekly, gave it mostly poor reviews.

Several critics lauded Soulja Boy with launching a new hip-hop movement, while others predicted he’d be a one-hit wonder. Way released more singles, mixtapes, and a digital album in 2015 following the release of his fourth studio album, Loyalty.

Way released the track “Whippin My Wrist (Too Rich)” on February 27 in support of his upcoming digital album, King Soulja 4, which charted at number 48 on the Billboard Trending 140. Way dropped his Swag mixtape on May 16th.

On July 17, Way dropped “Actavis,” a new single featuring Migos from his fourth digital album King Soulja 4.  Way dropped his M & M: Money and Music mixtape on July 23.  Way’s fourth digital album, King Soulja 4, was published on July 30 under his independent label Stacks on Deck Entertainment, and included Migos, ReeseMoneyBagz, Dae Dot, and Sean Kingston among the guests.

Way dropped his single “Diddy Bop” on September 1st.  Way released “Gratata,” a single and music video, on September 24. Way dropped his mixtape Plug Talk on September 28th.  Way debuted his new track, “Make It Rain,” on November 9th.  Way dropped his mixtape S. Beezy on November 24.

Way dropped his fifth and sixth digital albums, as well as a slew of mixtapes, songs, and videos, in 2016. Way released “Drop The Top” as a single on January 14 and the music video for it on January 24.Way released a solo single, “Stephen Curry,” on January 24, and a music video for the song was released on February 6.

Way’s latest mixtape, Finesse EP, was released on February 10th.  Way dropped King Soulja 5, his fifth mixtape/album, on February 14th. Way released his fifth digital album, Stacks On Deck, on March 15 through his independent label, with contributions from Agoff, King Reefa, Lil Yachty, and Rich The Kid.

“Day One,” a single by Way, was released on May 12. Way released his sixth digital album, Better Late Than Never, on June 9 through his label Stacks on Deck Entertainment, which featured Lil Twist and Lil Yachty as guests. “Rockstar,” a single by Way, was released on July 23.

Way released his self-titled mixtape Rockstar on July 31.  The sequel mixtape S. Beezy 2 was released on August 23rd.Way dropped the single “Max Payne” on September 14th. “Hit Them Folks,” a single by Way, was released on September 24. Way released “I’m Up Now,” a single featuring Chief Keef, on September 26.

The sixth episode of Way’s King Soulja mixtape/album series, King Soulja 6, was released on September 29.  Ignorant Shit, a joint retail mixtape from Way and Bow Wow, was released on October 25, 2016. Way responded to fan claims that Tyga made the biggest comeback of any artist in 2018 on Instagram Live in late 2018.

With a sample of the video going viral the same day, Way angrily declared he had made the largest comeback.  Way spoke on the radio show The Breakfast Club later in January 2019 to defend his views. Following the interview, a clip of Way answering a question about Drake became a popular meme.

Throughout 2019, Way continued to release singles and two mixtapes, the first of which, Fuego, was released on January 10, while the second, Tell Ya, was released on March 25. Way revealed on January 18, 2019, that he was working on his fifth studio album, How Can You Blame Me?, which is due out on July 28. Way’s detention in 2019 caused the album to be postponed for unclear reasons.

Way released the mixtape King Soulja 9, on July 28, 2020, following his burgeoning success as a Twitch streamer. Way released the mixtape Swag 3 in late November 2020, and at the start of 2021, he released various tracks including Pandemic and CEO.  Way’s mixtape Soulja World, featuring longtime collaborator Lil B, was released on February 1, 2021.  Soulja Boy signed with Virgin Music in April 2021.
