Colvin had been born on 10 January 1956 in Vermillion, South Dakota. At age 10, her affinity for music had been discovered and she taught guitar herself. After travelling to London, Ontario and Carbondale, Illinois, twice Colvin created the Shawn Colvin Band, which soon squeezed its voice into strong rock demands.In 1983, she travelled to New York where she acquired a house in the singer and songwriter scene in the city and established a sequence in the vicinity.
Over the 1980s the folklore circuit was developed, and acts such as Pump Boys and Dinettes, Diamond Studs and Lie of the Mind also took place off-broadway. She has worked in the Fast Folk magazine, too, and she sang back up Suzanne Vega’s smash song “Luka” in 1987 for her first break. She had found in John Leventhal the following year a songwriting partner, who began giving Colvin’s words melodies. Columbia Records, who signed it the same year following its success by similar performers like Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and the Indigo Girls, caught the attention of a live cassette distributed during Colvin’s gigs (Live ’88).
BIOGRAPHY:
In 1989, Steady On won the Best Contemporary Folk Recording Grammy Award. Colvin’s 1992 sophomore efforts, the more pop-oriented Fat City, have received two additional nominations—Best Contemporary Folk Recording and Best Pop Vocal for the tune ‘I Don’t Know Why.’ “I Don’t Know Why” has also become a great contemporary adult hit.At the end of 1996, A Few Small Repairs was released by Colvin who wrote the album during an uncomfortable divorce. In 1997, the success of the “Sunny Came Home” in the pop charts steadily led to the fact that a few small repairs were a success.
In 1998, ‘Sunny Came Home’ received two Grammy Awards for year record and year song, and her first platinum record, A Few Small Repairs. The fall was followed by Holiday Songs and Lullabies. Colvin played songs by Béla Fleck, Edwin McCain, James Taylor and Shawn Mullins during the New Millennium. She also worked with Sting on Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove “One Day She’ll Love Me.” Her first 15 years in his recording career with the compilation Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection, in 2004, she returned to the solo format with 2001’s Wholesale New you.
There is also an accompanying home video. Two years later, her Nonesuch label debut, named These Four Wall, was released by Colvin with another album. Among others, Patty Griffin and Teddy Thompson had guest performances. Colvin filmed her three-night residence at Yoshi’s on his tour in San Francisco in support of the album, released as Live performance album in 2009. Colvin’s eighth album in the studio, All Fall Down, 2012 was made in Miller’s home studio by Buddy Miller, with guest spot from Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Jakob Dylan, etc. in Nashville.
Colvin released a sequel of 1994’s Uncovered Cover Girl, which included work by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash. The following project of Colvin found its collaboration with Steve Earle, another well known singer and songwriter. Colvin & Earle published in June 2016 and presented a few originals and a handful of favorites by their mutual followers. The 20th anniversary of A Few Small Repairs, she celebrates in 2017 with a luxury reissue and a short tour. Colvin published The Starlighter, an album based on Lullabies and Night Songs, a book of children, early in 2018.
