Kelly got a professional basketball deal with the Atlantic City Seagulls of the USBL in 1997. In honour of his album 12 Play, Kelly wore the number 12. “I love basketball enough to put my music to the side for a minute and accomplish some ambitions of mine that I’ve had for a long time,” Kelly said in a statement. Kelly’s USBL contract included a condition that said if he didn’t show up for work, he would be fired.
