Philip Bailey is most known for his falsetto, and appeared in the early 1970s as Maurice White’s four-octave counterpart to Earth, the repetitively multi-platinum Grammy outfit who raised the performing arts to a stunning level. Bailey co-wrote several of the initial songs of EW&F, including the “Evil” and “Shining Star,” in addition to singing and playing percussion and extended its reach into production towards finally the 1970s.
Bailey began his solitary career early in the eighties with the long-term EW&F and went through R&B, jazz, gospel and pop, illuminated by the number two hit “Easy Lover” (1984) by Billboard Hot 100, the Grammy-winning Triumph gospel recording (1986) and the most adventurous work by the singer, Love Will Find a Way (2019, Billboard’s Jazz Charts, in which EW & F were celebrating their 50th anniversary. As a boy in his native Denver, Philip Irvin Bailey began to chant at church.
He stayed for college at his country, where he studied at the University of Colorado and Metropolitan State University. Bailey was playing in a band named Friends & Love during this period. They were opening up to Earth, Wind & Fire, whose Maurice White so invited the singer and percussionist Andrew Woolfolks to join the reworked lineup of his group.
Bailey was a long time enthusiastic in cutting the third EW&F album: Last Days and Time (1972) and became the band’s first two singles in the top 25 chart, head to the Sky (1983) co-writing “Evil” and heading “Keep Your Head to the Sky.” Bailey has become an integral part of EW&F, a live electrification act with remarkable business success. In the mid-70s, Bailey co-wrote some of her Signing Songs, including the Top 40 pop hit Devotion and the number one pop and R&B single Shining Star which earned its first Grammy for Best R&B Performance.
The song has been shown on some of its signature songs. In addition, Bailey co-wrote the show stopper Reasons which only rivalled the footsteps in the dark by the Isley Brothers as the best, notorious ballad of the era. Bailey participated in various jazz and R&B sessions for other artists in intermittent gaps in touring and recording with his band members.
He wrote, arranged, sang and played percussion in different combinations. Most notably, he led the EVF-styled “Deja Vus,” a profound masterpiece that didn’t get the advertising push that it deserved, of Paulinho Da Costa, the “Sun Goddess” of Ramsey Lewis, a number 20 R&B success. During this period, Bailey produced the new acts Free Life, Dazz Band predecessor Kinsman Dazz, and Splendor.
Columbia awarded a solo agreement to Bailey by Earth, Wind & Fire and made his debut with George Duke’s production of Continuation in 1983 as a leading conductor. The album achieved R&B chart number 19, supported by “I Know.” The ranking was number ten. The vocalist branch off the next year again and went back to Columbia and the pop R&B with the Chinese Wall produced from Phil Collins, with his first gospel track for the Myrrh/Word family. Bailey’s most successful solo LP was Chinese Wall.
With aid from the Collins duet ‘Easy Lover,’ a crossover crash which took third and second spots on R&B and Pop charts, it reached number 10 on Billboard 200. Grammy was soon nominated in three areas by Bailey. The marvels of his love have been recognized for best inspiring performance. Both Chinese Wall and “Easy Lover” have been up to the best R&B and the best pop performance respectively.
In 1986 Bailey released albums, mainly self-produced Triumph (for Word/Horizon) and Inside Out again in multiple idioms (for Columbia). The former won Bailey for best performance in the Gospel. The Top 30 R&B entry was supported by Duke, Collins and Ray Parker, Jr. Bailey worked closely with Nile Rodgers. One third religious charts LP, Family Affair, closed the decade, to the point that Deniece Williams, Kenny Loggins, Stevie Wonder and Nancy Wilson might find the name Bailey on sleeves of LPs.
During the 1990s and into the next decade, Bailey continued to blend solitary and group activities. In 1992 he was part of the Star-filled ensemble, organized and managed by James Mack, which met for Pride of Lions. Bailey added three albums to his solo catalogue from 1994 through the end of the decade (on as many labels). Philip Bailey was a current R&B manager, produced by Mack with contributions from Chuckii Booker, Brian McKnight and P.M. Dawn.
The vocalist then began his solo life with Life & Love and cooperating with Incognito’s Jean-Paul Maunick and Graham Harvey. Three years later, Maurice White departed from his touring career as Bailey was the head of the EWF on the stage. In 1999 Bailey released “The Masquerade Is Over,” and “Something you can remember” by the artist, Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. Soul @ Jazz in 2002 was followed by jazz-focused news from compositions like “Compared to What,” “Nature Boy” and “Tell me a Bedtime Story.”
Induced in 2000 and 2010, Earth, Wind & Fire received various honours, because of its constant Live drawing and published some more records during the next couple of decades. Earth, Wind & Fire received numerous awards in 2010 at Rock &Roll Hall of Fame. Bailey launched his 11th solo album in 2019, the year the band made their mark half a century. Love Will Find a Way, a multi-generational caste for jazz performers, Chick Corea, Robert Glasper, and Kamasi Washington, have seen him alternate between originals and renditions. Billboard’s Jazz Albums diagram at the top was the expansive record.
