Paul Carrack was the ultimate traveller. While he achieved considerable success as a vocalist and keyboardist with bands ranging from Ace to Squeeze and Mike + the Mechanics, his best work often came at the expense of his own identity as a performer; in fact, only one of his many big hits, 1987’s “Don’t Shed a Tear,” bore his own name as a singer.
A steady stream of albums has been released since the mid-’90s that showcase his soulful vocal style and keyboard skills, whether he is performing his own R&B-influenced pop material or rock and pop.It Ain’t Over, released in 2003, gave him a chance to show off his abilities as a singer, composer, and instrumentalist, and A Different Hat, released in 2010, was an ambitious project with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
BIOGRAPHY:
Originally from Sheffield, England, Paul Carrack made his professional recording debut with the jazz-rock band Warm Dust when he was still a teenager. Carrack and Warm Dust bassist Terry “Tex” Comer helped form the pub rock group Ace in 1972 after the band broke up.Carrack joined Frankie Miller’s band in 1977 after Ace’s subsequent material failed to match “How Long’s” success in the U.S. However, after subsequent material failed to match “How Long’s” success in the U.S.
As a result of Mike + the Mechanics’ success, Carrack’s third solo album, One Good Reason, became his most successful to date, with the single “Don’t Shed a Tear” reaching the Top Ten. The Living Years, released in 1988, was the group’s first chart-topper. Following Groove Approved (1989), Mike + the Mechanics released Word of Mouth (1991), which failed to match its predecessors’ chart performance. Carrack rejoined Squeeze for the album Some Fantastic Place and the re-recording of “Tempted.” Beggar on a Beach of Gold, released in 1995, was his return to the Mechanics fold; Blue Views, released the following year, and Beautiful World, released in 1997, were his solo albums. Satisfy My Soul, his first Compass Records album, was released in 2000.
Groovin’ in 2001 and It Ain’t Over in 2003 were released by Carrack during the first half of the 2000s, both solo and as the frontman for Mike + the Mechanics. A holiday album appeared in 2005, followed by the albums Old, New, Borrowed and Blue in 2007 (all of which were released in 2008). He took a detour in 2010 with A Different Hat, an album he made in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then, in 2012, he released the soulful Good Feeling. Rain or Shine, Carrack’s follow-up album from 2013, was produced by Peter Van Hooke. On Eric Clapton’s 50th anniversary tour in 2013 and his 70th birthday celebrations in 2015, Carrack performed with the guitarist.
Carrack had already reunited with Van Hooke for 2016’s Soul Shadows album by that point.. Together, the two also worked on the 2018 film These Days. Christmas with Paul Carrack, The SWR Big Band and Strings was released in 2019 and Another Side of Paul Carrack was released in 2020.It wasn’t long before he returned to Roxy Music, appearing on the albums Manifesto and Flesh and Blood before going solo in 1980 with the release of Nightbird. Carrack then joined Squeeze, replacing keyboardist Jools Holland, and sang lead vocals on “Tempted,” the group’s most famous song.
