Meghan Elizabeth Trainor was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1993, to Kelly Anne “Kelli” (Jekanowski) and Gary Trainor. Ryan and Justin are her brothers. Trainor was born into a musical household, with her father being a music instructor and pianist. Since she was six years old, she has accompanied her father to local churches to sing. Trainor began writing music and pursuing a career as a recording artist at the age of 11.
Trainor began studying numerous musical genres and instruments, including piano, guitar, and bongo drum, with the encouragement of her father. She began playing at the age of 12 as a member of the band Island Fusion, which also comprised her aunt, brother, and father. Trainor’s compositions were performed with cover songs, soca music, and the band’s own material. She wrote her first original song, ‘Give Me a Chance,’ at the age of 13. During this time period, the family relocated to North Eastham, Massachusetts.
Trainor earned her high school diploma from Nauset Regional High School, where she studied guitar and volunteered as a cheerleader substitute. She even spent three years singing and playing trumpet in a jazz ensemble. Trainor attended multiple songwriting conventions with the encouragement of her parents. Until her home studio became functional, she recorded and produced her works in Logic Studio. Trainor’s love in singing and songwriting stems from her musically inclined family; her father is her rock.
Meghan Trainor has always had a passion for music, which her parents fostered and supported. She began writing music at the age of eleven and wrote her first original score two years later. In 2014, she made her major-label debut with the publication of ‘Title,’ her major-label debut studio album. The album opened at number one on the US Billboard 200 and went on to sell over one million copies in the United States. Trainor’s music is characterized by a nostalgic look. The majority of her work is concerned with contemporary womanhood, body image, and empowerment. Christina Aguilera, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Ariana Grande, and Jason Mraz have all inspired her work.
Trainor debuted professionally in 2009 with the publication of her self-titled debut album, ‘Meghan Trainor’. Local radio stations gave the album extensive airing. Meanwhile, she enrolled in the Berklee College of Music’s Summer Performance Program. She was one of the songwriting competition’s finalists. Trainor released two acoustic albums in 2011, ‘I’ll Sing with You’ and ‘Only 17’. Following that, she turned down several offers, including a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, to pursue a publishing agreement with Carla Wallace at Big Yellow Dog Music. She began her career as a songwriter-for-hire before transitioning to music publishing.
Her position necessitated travel to Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles, where she wrote and assisted in the production of the country and pop songs. The couple had a passion for vintage music. Trainor co-wrote the song ‘All About that Bass’ with Kadish in 2013. Trainor opted to record the song herself following a string of rejections. ‘All About That Bass’ was launched in June 2014 and quickly became a viral smash. The song peaked at number one in 58 countries and became one of the all-time best-selling songs.
It was certified six times platinum and sold more than six million copies worldwide. As one of the year’s biggest hits, it provided Trainor with a much-needed and well-deserved career boost. The album debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and number 17 on the Canadian Albums Chart when it was released in September 2014. Due to the removal of her three previously published indie albums from circulation, ‘Title’ served as her debut album. Trainor then released her second single, ‘Lips Are Movin,’ which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the fifth female artist to follow up a chart-topping debut single with another top 5 success.
The single was certified double platinum. By 2014, Trainor’s popularity had skyrocketed. She was named the fourth most popular music artist in Google’s 2014 Year in Search. Additionally, Billboard named her the year’s fourth Top New Artist and 12th on their own 21 Under 21 list. Trainor released the singles ‘Dear Future Husband’ and ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You’ following the success of her debut single and album. Additionally, she appeared in Charlie Puth’s debut single, ‘Marvin Gaye’.
Trainor’s health difficulties forced her to take a back seat at a time when her career was accelerating. She was diagnosed with a hemorrhage of the vocal cords and was instructed to take a total vocal rest. Trainor co-wrote Rascal Flatts’ hit ‘I Like the Sound of That’ in August 2015. Trainor announced the completion of her second studio album, ‘Thank You’, in January 2016.
The album’s lead track, ‘No,’ peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. She immediately released four promotional singles, including ‘Watch Me Do’, ‘I Love Me’, ‘Better (with Yo Gotti)’, and ‘Mom’. Trainor’s sophomore studio album, ‘Thank You,’ was released on Apple Music exclusively on May 6, 2016. Its second song, ‘Me Too,’ was released the day before. Critics gave the album mixed reviews, with the album reaching number five in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and number three in Australia and the United States.
