Trainor debuted professionally in 2009 with the publication of her self-titled debut album, ‘Meghan Trainor’. Local radio stations gave the album extensive airing. Meanwhile, she enrolled in the Berklee College of Music’s Summer Performance Program. She was one of the songwriting competition’s finalists. Trainor released two acoustic albums in 2011, ‘I’ll Sing with You’ and ‘Only 17’. Following that, she turned down several offers, including a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, to pursue a publishing agreement with Carla Wallace at Big Yellow Dog Music. She began her career as a songwriter-for-hire before transitioning to music publishing.
Her position necessitated travel to Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles, where she wrote and assisted in the production of the country and pop songs. The couple had a passion for vintage music. Trainor co-wrote the song ‘All About that Bass’ with Kadish in 2013. Trainor opted to record the song herself following a string of rejections. ‘All About That Bass’ was launched in June 2014 and quickly became a viral smash. The song peaked at number one in 58 countries and became one of the all-time best-selling songs.
It was certified six times platinum and sold more than six million copies worldwide. As one of the year’s biggest hits, it provided Trainor with a much-needed and well-deserved career boost. The album debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and number 17 on the Canadian Albums Chart when it was released in September 2014. Due to the removal of her three previously published indie albums from circulation, ‘Title’ served as her debut album. Trainor then released her second single, ‘Lips Are Movin,’ which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the fifth female artist to follow up a chart-topping debut single with another top 5 success.
The single was certified double platinum. By 2014, Trainor’s popularity had skyrocketed. She was named the fourth most popular music artist in Google’s 2014 Year in Search. Additionally, Billboard named her the year’s fourth Top New Artist and 12th on their own 21 Under 21 list. Trainor released the singles ‘Dear Future Husband’ and ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You’ following the success of her debut single and album. Additionally, she appeared in Charlie Puth’s debut single, ‘Marvin Gaye’.
Trainor’s health difficulties forced her to take a back seat at a time when her career was accelerating. She was diagnosed with a hemorrhage of the vocal cords and was instructed to take a total vocal rest. Trainor co-wrote Rascal Flatts’ hit ‘I Like the Sound of That’ in August 2015. Trainor announced the completion of her second studio album, ‘Thank You’, in January 2016.
The album’s lead track, ‘No,’ peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. She immediately released four promotional singles, including ‘Watch Me Do’, ‘I Love Me’, ‘Better (with Yo Gotti)’, and ‘Mom’. Trainor’s sophomore studio album, ‘Thank You,’ was released on Apple Music exclusively on May 6, 2016. Its second song, ‘Me Too,’ was released the day before. Critics gave the album mixed reviews, with the album reaching number five in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and number three in Australia and the United States.
