Lupe Fiasco is one of the most cerebral and intriguing performers working since the mid-2000s, as evidenced by Grammy accolades and multiple gold and platinum certifications. It took a few years for the rapper and producer to gain traction, but his name has been well-known since his featured appearance on Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky” (2005), a chart-topping single that set him up for success with a career that has included seven albums, highlighted by the Top Ten releases Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor (2007), the chart-topping Lasers (2011), and Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album (2012).
Although Lupe is known for his intricate storytelling and inventive metaphorical verses, he hasn’t shied away from chart-topping tunes, including “Superstar” and “The Show Goes On.” Lupe regained creative independence in the latter half of the 2010s, as seen by the integrated and expansive full-lengths Drogas Light (2017) and Drogas Wave (2018). (2018). Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, the Chicago-based MC, began rapping in junior high school and eventually joined a group called da Pak.
The group signed with Epic issued one single and then disbanded before Lupe turned twenty. L.A. Reid signed Lupe as a solo artist to Arista in part due to Jay-strong Z’s support, but Reid was fired before anything significant could happen — only a promo song and a couple of guest appearances were scheduled. Lupe eventually signed with another major label, Atlantic.
Preceded by multiple mixtapes, a guest appearance on Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky,”.The rapper garnered three Grammy nominations for the album, which debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200. The award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance went to “Daydreamin’,” featuring Jill Scott. The Cool, a highly conceptual follow-up, was released in December 2007. It gained gold certification and resulted in four additional Grammy nominations, highlighted by “Superstar,” Lupe’s first Top Ten and platinum record.
Lupe encountered a lot of roadblocks on his approach to releasing his third album, Lasers, despite a track record of tremendous commercial success and critical acclaim. The process resulted in a petition signed by over 30,000 supporters pleading with Atlantic to release the album, which was followed by a fan protest outside the label’s New York City offices. Lasers debuted at the top of three charts upon its release on Atlantic in March 2011: the Billboard 200, Hot R&B/Hip Hop Albums, and Hot Rap Albums. It was spurred forward by “The Show Must Go On” (which peaked at number ten on the Hot 100) and “Out of My Head” (which peaked at number forty on the Hot 100 and number eleven on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop).
While the third album was in pre-release limbo, work on the MC’s fourth album, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1, began. Its development and birth in September 2012 were pretty straightforward. Lupe, who has never shied away from controversy, received backlash for “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” due to its use of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s 1992 classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y. ),” as well as for “Bitch Bad,” which was so harshly criticized by Spin magazine that Lupe called for a boycott of the publication. Lupe’s reign atop the Billboard Rap Albums chart was prolonged with this album, which also featured another chart-topping single, “Battle Scars.” A few non-album singles were released during 2014 and 2015, including the Ed Sheeran duet “Old School Love.”
Tetsuo & Youth, Lupe’s fifth full-length album, was a return to form that nearly topped the rap chart. It was influenced by Lupe’s Chicago roots and brimming with punch lines. Three albums were planned for release in 2016. Lupe was unable to release the songs “Pick Up the Phone” and “Made in the USA” throughout the year due to what he referred to as “clearing and mixing complications.” Lupe also uploaded a tune that December, “N.E.R.D.,” which contained a lyric deemed anti-Semitic by the Anti-Defamation League.
The rapper defended himself and proclaimed on social media that he would “officially” stop releasing songs. Drogas Light, which featured cameos by Ty Dolla $ign, Big K.R.I.T., and Rick Ross, was released independently the following February via Thirty Tigers. Drogas Wave debuted in September 2018, inspired in part by a story about Africans who jumped from a slave ship, adapted to life underwater, and sank other ships for the sake of freedom. Fiasco released the previously unreleased single “Run Game” in June 2019. The track was released in 2006 as the opening track for a compilation project titled Chill’s Spotlight, which was curated by the rapper’s 1st & 15th label co-founder Charles “Chilly” Patton.
