Feliciano was born on September 10, 1945, in Lares, Puerto Rico; he was left completely blind by birth as a sufferer of congenital glaucoma. Five years afterwards, Feliciano and his family travelled to the Spanish Harlem section of New York City. Feliciano started playing the accordion, later took the guitar and made his first public appearance at El Teatro Puerto Rico in Bronx at the age of nine.
During high school he was an integral part of the Greenwich Village Coffeehouse circuit and finally left school in 1962 to enjoy a permanent show in Detroit. There was a contract with RCA following a show at the German Folk City of New York and in two years he appeared to the Newport Jazz Festival. He released his flamenco-flavored first LP, The Voice and Guitar by Jose Feliciano after his novelty song, “Everybody Do the Click,” in 1964, trailed by The Fantastic Feliciano early next year.
Unhappy about his musical direction after his 1966 release A Bag Full of Soul, he went back to the root of the RCA International with three consecutive Spanish-speaking LPs, Sombras, Una Voz, Una Guitarra, Mas Exitos de Jose Feliciano, and Sentimiento, La Voz y La Guitarra, scored on the Latin Pop Charts by the singles “La Copa Rota” and “Amor Gitana.”
In 1968, Feliciano! scored an overwhelming achievement by reading the ‘Light My Fire’ doors, which led him to the popular mainstream; a smash cover of Tommy Tucker’s R&B Chestnut, ‘hi Heel Sneakers,’ solidified his achievement and Feliciano soon became a National Hymnist in Detroit, Germany, during the 1968 World Series.
His quirky Latin jazz performances were immensely contentious and his place as a new anti-cultural hero, with one single of his versions also becoming a smash, was established despite the protests of traditionalists and nationalists. Live Alive-O! Alive-O! Three albums — Souled, Alive Alive-O!, 10-23 — were recorded in 1969 and won the Grammy for Best New Artist, yet it was his 1970 Christmas album that gave his most lasting tune. His Latin classic “Feliz Navidad” has for decades been a perennial Christmas staple and often covered by different musicians.
Over the next years of the 70’s, Feliciano remained a prolific musician, travelling every year to publish a number of LPs, both English and Spanish. Including Steve Cropper’s 1973 Compartments. Feliciano appeared at Joni Mitchell’s song “Free Man in Paris.” He also wrote the song about the sitcom Chico and the Man, which was added to the Top 100 single chart in 1974. Your Immense Love (Your Immense Love) In 1980, Feliciano was the first to sign his label debut with an eponymous effort in the new Motown Latin division.
During the course of the decade, his recorded results tapered, but he sometimes resurged with LPs such Tu Inmenso Amor in 1987 and I’m Never Gonna Change in 1989. The Jose Feliciano Performing Arts School was renamed a school in East Harlem in his honour. He also appeared briefly in the Hit Fargo in 1996 and was awarded the Grammy Legend Award in 2000.
In the start of the decade a number of Spanish albums debuted, and Feliciano came back in 2006 with his Six-String Lady instrumental CD, launching a prolific run which saw a continuous stream of releases far into the 2010s. His most important project during that period was the 2017 duet album As You See Me Now with Jools Holland. In the next decade Feliciano rejoined with Rick Jarrard for his debut album in Nashville in 2020, Behind This Guitar.
