Gerard Way is an American singer-songwriter, band member, musician, and comic book writer/director. In 2001, he founded the band ‘My Chemical Romance,’ which rose to prominence before disbanding in 2013. Way, like most kids, was a big fan of comic books when he was younger. To pursue his interest, he wrote and produced ‘The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,’ a darkly humorous Milena.
His grandmother, Lee Rush, was his mentor as he grew up. When he was in elementary school, he played the role of ‘Peter Pan’ in a school musical. After hearing the influential Bon Jovi, Way decided to pursue a career as a performer. He began to listen to music and paint. Way remained quiet as other kids his age began to party. He struggled the most in high school because few people understood him.
His only companion was his younger brother. He developed an addiction to alcohol and had run-ins with the cops. When he was 16, he began drawing comic strips about a fictional serial killer named Jeffrey Dahmer. After graduating from ‘Belleville High School’ in 1995, he chose to attend ‘The School of Visual Arts in New York and pursue a career in the comic industry.
He graduated with a ‘Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1999 and was hired as an intern at ‘Cartoon Network,’ where he worked on toy designs and animations.
After landing a job with ‘Cartoon Network,’ everything seemed to be going well for Way. He and Joe Boyle wrote and submitted ‘The Breakfast Monkey’ to the Network. The concept, however, was rejected due to its resemblance to the current ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force.’ Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, his life was irreversibly altered. The tragedy instilled in me a desire to help others and make a difference.
As a result, Way turned to music to accomplish his goal. In 2001, he began writing ‘Skylines and Turnstiles,’ a song about the mental anguish that followed the attack. It was the debut single from his new band, ‘My Chemical Romance.’ As guitarists, Ray Toro, Frank Iero, and Gerard’s brother Mikey Way were brought in. He also brought in pianist James Dewees to the band. The band eventually rose to prominence and began work on their debut album.
The following year, the band released their debut studio album, ‘I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.’ After selling over 100,000 copies, the BPI certified the album as gold. His second studio album, ‘Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge,’ was released in 2004. It peaked at number 28 on the ‘US Billboard 200,’ and the Recording Industry Association of America and Music Canada both certified it platinum.
They released another album, ‘The Black Parade,’ in 2006, and it was a huge success. ‘Every Time I Die’ and ‘Head Automatica,’ for example, featured Way in their songs ‘Kill the Music’ and ‘Graduation Day,’ which were released around the same time as ‘Every Time I Die.’ By 2007, his passion for drawing comic strips had returned, and he began work on ‘The Umbrella Academy,’ a best-selling comic book published on September 19, 2007.
the success of his debut comic book, he collaborated with Shaun Simon in 2009 to co-create the comic series ‘The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.’ During the 2012 ‘New York Comic Con,’ Way stated that readers would get a sneak peek at the series when it was released on ‘Free Comic Book Day in 2013. In 2014, he and Gabriel Ba began work on the sequels to ‘The Umbrella Academy.’
In an interview, he stated that the next installments of his comic book would be more detailed. He also stated that two volumes would be released one after the other, with a few flashback copies thrown in for good measure. Simultaneously, he began work on ‘All Ages,’ a cat-themed comic book. In 2014, he signed a deal with Marvel Dimension for the comic series ‘Edge of Spider-Verse,’ which created an alternate universe for Spider-Man.
In the season two finale episode of ‘The Aquabats! Super Show!,’ he made his directorial debut, co-writing and co-directing. It received a ‘Daytime Emmy Award’ nomination for ‘Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series.’My Chemical Romance’s Split and Solo Album When the band ‘My Chemical Romance’ disbanded, Way signed a solo deal with Warner Bros Records. In June 2014, he released “Action Cat” as a promotional single for his upcoming album. He went on tour in support of his debut solo studio album.
He made his debut in 2014 at the ‘Reading and Leeds Festival,’ followed by a performance at the ‘Wedgewood Rooms.’ On August 19, 2014, a music video for the song ‘No Shows,’ the first single from his album ‘Hesitant Alien,’ was released. The album was released in stores on September 29, 2014. To promote his album, he formed the band ‘The Hormones,’ and they toured with him in February and March 2015.
They also performed as a group at the ‘Australian 2015 Soundwave Music Festival.’ In 2015, he co-wrote and sang on Andy Black’s song “Louder Than Your Love.” In 2016, he added two new songs to his album, ‘Don’t Try’ and ‘Pinkish.’ Following a brief hiatus, Way returned in 2018 with a string of singles. Among the singles are ‘Baby You’re a Haunted House,’ ‘Getting Down the Germs,’ and ‘Dasher.’
He released covers of ‘Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ and ‘The Turtles’ ‘Happmones.’ As the band’s lead vocalist, he works with guitarists Ian Fowles and Matt Gorney, drummer Jarrod Alexander, and keyboardist James Dewees.
