Eric Burdon, the Animals’ lead singer, was a standout among the British Invasion’s singers, known for his piercing blues-rock voice. After the group’s initial lineup disbanded in 1966, Burdon continued to use the Animals moniker with a variety of musicians for the next few years.
Although the group was referred to as Eric Burdon & the Animals, it was really just Burdon’s vehicle for promoting his more psychedelic and less R&B-oriented musical ideas and visions. A few of his songs, such as “Sky Pilot,” made it to the top of the second division’s psychedelic charts; however, most of them were indulgent and dated almost immediately.
Burdon’s greatest successes as a solo artist came in the early 1970s when he formed War with a group of L.A.-based journeymen soul/funksters. The Burdon/War recordings, which recorded three albums’ worth of material in just over a year, could have gone on indefinitely and benefited greatly from extensive editing. The band’s number three hit single, “Spill the Wine,” was almost recorded as an afterthought during sessions dominated by exploratory jams, but it contained some excellent spacy funkadelia.

When Eric Burdon abruptly left War in 1971 for reasons that remain a mystery to this day, the band was already a major success both on record and on stage. Despite the fact that War defied expectations and grew in popularity when left to their own devices, guitarist Eric Burdon went on to record a series of forgettable solo albums after recording an album with blues legend Jimmy Witherspoon.
After that, he recorded here and there, sometimes with the Animals, but he hasn’t come close to matching his early Animals and War work in terms of quality. He was always an electrifying live performer, however, and even after his departure from the Animals, Burdon went on to tour with various incarnations of the band and solo. He also worked as a painter and an author, as well as in the studio when the occasion called for it.
To this day, Burdon is still on the road as a wanderer, releasing quality albums like My Secret Life in 2004, and Soul of a Man in 2006. At South by Southwest in 2012, Bruce Springsteen used him as a centerpiece of his keynote speech. When Burdon joined Springsteen on stage, he immediately became a sought-after musician. ‘Til Your River Runs Dry was released in January 2013 to critical acclaim and was followed up by an EP with the Ohio garage rockers the Greenhornes.
