Ed Ames is also an American singer and actor, who recorded as Eddie Ames. He has been well know for playing Mingo in the television series Daniel Boone, as well as for his pop song “My Cup Runneth Over,” “Who Will Answer?” and “When the Snow’s on the Roses” between the mid- to late 60s. He also belonged alongside his siblings, the Ames brothers, to the popular singing group of the 1950s. Ames was born in Malden, Massachusetts, United States, and emigrated from Ukraine to the Jewish parents Sarah (Zaslavskaya) and David Urick (Eurich).
He was the youngest of the 9 kids, 5 boys and 4 girls. In a disadvantaged household, Ames grew up. He was schooled in classical and opera music and literature at the Boston Latin School. Although they were still in high school, the brothers established a quartet and routinely won contests in Boston. Three of the brothers then joined the Amory Brothers quartet and travelled to New York City for Art Mooney, the leader of the band. Playwright Abe Burrows helped the siblings to change the name of their organization to the brothers Ames.
Ed Ames Biography/Wiki
The Ames Brothers first signed with Decca Records in 1947, but due to a 1948 prohibition of the Musicians Union (a 1942-44 carryover), Decca only released three singles of the Brothers, plus a support of Russ Morgan. As the prohibition ended, they joined a subsidiary of Decca, Coral Records. In the 1950s they had the double-sided “Rag Mop” and “Sentimental Me” their first big hit. The brothers joined RCA Victor records and were successful throughout the 1950s with numerous successes like ‘You, you, you’ and ‘The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane.’
The brothers regularly appeared on Network TV shows and in 1955 they had a short 15-minute show of their own. In the early 1960s, the Ames Brothers dissolved, and Ed Ames enrolled at Herbert Berghof School after a career in acting. His first part in the off-road production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible was the star of the shows in Broadway’s The Fantasticks and Carnival!. He was in the Carnival National Touring Company. The dark skin and sharp face characteristics of Ames led to his being cast consistently as an American native.
In the Broadway production of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, alongside Kirk Douglas, he played Chief Bromden. Fox saw Ames in his production and invited talent scouts of the 20th Century, Mingo on the NBC TV show Daniel Boone, Fess Parker, Patricia Blair, Darby Hinton and Veronica Cartwright to perform on the Cherokee tribesman. His father’s character was an English commander, Walter Pidgeon’s Fourth Earl of Dunmore, in the show. In that play, Mingo was the eldest son of the Earl and was therefore eligible to assume the title as the fifth Earl but elected to stay part of the nation of Cherokee.
In a Season One episode, Ames also depicted Mingo’s wicked twin brother, Taramingo. The principal character of Ames was actually Caramingo, but Mingo spent the whole series. Ames played the wanted assassin in the hotel because of the quarantines of little pox in a 1962 episode of the Rifleman (“Quiet Night, Deadly Night”) and starred as a guest as a Kennedy with Kurt Russell in the title of the 1963 episode of “The Day of the Pawnees, Part 2” of ABC’s The Journeys of Jaimie McPheeters.
In 1963 he starred at the NBC modern Western series of Richard Egan, Redigo. Ames recorded with the name “Eddie Ames” and released a song “Bean Song (What Way To Boston?)” in January 1957 while still with the Ames Brothers. In 1965, Ames came back to singing as a solo artist. He released his first song “Try to Remember,” an RCA Victor chart. The song made the charts narrowly. In 1967, “My Cup Runneth Over” was a larger success. The song was a pop hit and a modern adult radio hit.
He was less successful in pop charts soon after and had just adults hits with “time, time” and “When the snow is on the roses” and Buffy Sainte-Timeless Marie’s Love. One last time in his singing career with “Who Will Answer?” he did the Pop Top Twenty in 1968. “Apologize” reached No. 47 in the hot single charts of the Canadian RPM Magazine. Ames’ unusual baritone is also common at Christmas thanks to his “Do You Hear What I Hear” version of the radio station. The song was treated best in 1962 by Bing Crosby, but the Ames version, recorded a number of years later, is frequently on holiday.
