Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Carly Rae Jepsen (born November 21, 1985 in Mission, British Columbia) is best known for the global pop phenomenon “Call Me Maybe,” which became the biggest-selling song in the world in 2012 and the best-selling domestic Canadian single in history. While studying at the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, where she had originally planned to become an elementary school music teacher before getting the songwriting bug at the age of seventeen, she received her first guitar.
When her high school drama teacher encouraged her to audition for the reality television show Canadian Idol, she was working as a waitress, busking, and performing in local pubs. Before her debut album, Tug of War, was released in 2008, Jepsen released a cover of John Denver’s “Sunshine on My Shoulders” and her forthcoming album’s title track. Song of the Year at the 2010 Canadian Radio Music Awards went to “Tug of War.”

A video of Justin Bieber lip-syncing the song with Selena Gomez, who was Justin’s girlfriend at the time, was uploaded to YouTube in January 2012, and the song began gaining international attention. He signed a deal with Justin Bieber’s manager, whose record label had global distribution through Interscope, in early February. An EP titled Curiosity was released in February 2012 and contained six songs from a future album.It didn’t take long for “Call Me Maybe” to go viral on YouTube and to top the charts in 37 countries.
To date, the song has sold more than 640,000 copies in Canada, making it the most successful Canadian single in history. The song was certified octuple platinum on June 21, 2012. There were 12.5 million copies of this song sold worldwide in 2012, and it was nominated for two Grammy Awards. In September 2012, Kiss, a 12-track dance-pop album featuring “Call Me Maybe” and the title track from Curiosity, was released. Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year were awarded to Kiss at the 2013 Juno Awards.
However, despite being hailed as one of the best albums of the year by a number of publications, her follow-up album, E•MO•TION (2015), debuted at No. 8 in Japan and Canada and at No. 16 in the United States. It was followed by the release of Dedicated (2019), her fourth studio album, as well as an outtakes collection titled Dedicated Side B (2020). When she made her Broadway debut in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella at New York City’s Broadway Theatre, Jepsen won a Tony Award for her performance. A live television presentation of the musical Grease was broadcast in January 2016 and she played Frenchy.
