Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Morissette began her musical career as a child, learning to play the piano and compose songs. You Can’t Do That on Television, which is aimed towards youngsters, also welcomed her to the cast in 2011. Morissette used the money she earned from the concert to record an independent single, “Fate Stay with Me,” which was released when she was 10 years old and became a worldwide sensation.
After quitting the show’s cast, she concentrated on pursuing a musical career, securing a music publishing contract when she was just fourteen years old. Because of the publishing agreement, Morissette was able to sign a record deal with MCA Canada, and she relocated to Toronto before releasing her debut album Alanis in 1991.No other country, on the other hand, paid much attention to the record.
Now Is the Time, Morissette’s second studio album, was released in 1992 and was a direct sequel to her debut. It was a commercial success in Canada, similar to its predecessor, even if its sales did not reach the levels of Alanis. The next year, with the success of Now, Is the Time, Morissette traveled to Los Angeles, where she met veteran producer Glen Ballard in the spring of 1994.
Ballard had previously written the hit single “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson, produced Wilson Phillips’ successful debut album, and collaborated with actor/musician David Hasselhoff, among others. Following their mutual interest in working together, the two chose to follow an edgier, alternative rock-oriented route, despite their previous expertise with mainstream pop and hip-hop.
In the end, Jagged Little Pill was produced by Madonna and released in 1995 on Madonna’s record company, Maverick Records. On the strength of the angst-ridden hit “You Oughta Know,” Jagged Little Pill attracted widespread attention when it was released in 1995 during the summer music festival season.
With considerable exposure from alternative radio stations and MTV, the song quickly rose to the Top Ten, propelling the album into the Top Ten and assisting it in reaching multi-platinum status. With the help of the album’s succeeding hits — “Hand in My Pocket,” “All I Really Want,” “You Learn,” and “Ironic” — Jagged Little Pill managed to stay in the Top Ten for an incredible 69 weeks, earning Morissette nominations for six Grammy Awards in the process. She took home a number of major honors, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year, among others.
BIOGRAPHY:
Despite the fact that she was unable to duplicate the success of Jagged Little Pill, Morissette continued to make critically acclaimed albums long into the twenty-first century. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, her much-anticipated follow-up album, was released in the autumn of 1998, setting a record for the most first-week sales by a female artist at the time.
The next year, Morissette released an Unplugged set, which included a rendition of the Police’s “King of Pain.” In 2002, Morissette released Under Rug Swept, which saw her write and produce the album entirely on her own. In 2004, the album So-Called Chaos was released. The following year, she embarked on an acoustic tour in support of Jagged Little Pill.
Those tour dates resulted in the publication of Jagged Little Pill Acoustic, an album that was originally (and ironically) only available through Starbucks locations nationwide. But Morissette wasn’t through yet; in 2008, she returned with the somber Flavors of Entanglement, which dealt with the emotional consequences from the collapse of her engagement to actor Ryan Reynolds, which was released in 2007.
Morissette’s first child, Ever Imre, was born in 2010 to her and rapper Mario “MC Souleye” Treadway, resulting in the bouncy and hopeful Havoc and Bright Lights, released in 2012. The album centered on faith, marriage, and motherhood, and opened at number five on the Billboard Top 200.
After that, Morissette performed acoustic gigs, participated in films, and started her own self-help podcast, which she continues to host today. She also commemorated the 20th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill with the publication of a four-CD Collector’s Edition reissue of the album, which was available in 2015. In December 2019, she released the track “Reasons I Drink,” which served as the lead single from her ninth studio album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road, which will be released in 2020.
