Travis Scott, born Jacques Webster, grew up in Houston and started music as a teenager. He established a duo named Chris Holloway’s Graduates and published an EP in 2009. He created another duet with OG Chess the next year, the Classmates. Scott manufactured two full-length pairs, Buddy Rich and the Cruis’n United States, but collapsed near the end of 2011.
After leaving college, Scott traveled to Los Angeles and started to record music alone. He met T.I. and Kanye West eventually. Scott was employed for GOOD Music as an in-house producer and performed on the Cruel Summer label compilation in 2012.
While Scott’s debut Owl Pharaoh was first scheduled for distribution as a free mixtape in 2012, the Album was not published until May 2013 with the growth of its profile (including an addition to the 2013 Freshman Class XXL Magazine) and the sample clearance complications.
Owl Pharaoh won the nomination of Best Mixtape for the 2013 Best Hip Hop Awards with guest performances from T.I. and 2 Chainz (on the tune “Upper Echelon”) as well as the Toro y Moi and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. The first proper studio album was produced by Scott’s Days Before Rodeo, promoted with the singles “Don’t Play” and “Mamacita,” and the US Rodeo Tour in March 2015, led by Several dates have been sold out. The same month, the popular single “Bitch Better Have My Money” produced by Rihanna’s Scott was released.
Chatter and frequent delays followed up throughout much of 2016. In the meantime, Scott expanded its commercial presence with featured spots at “Bake Sale” in Wiz Khalifa, “Woo” in Rihanna and the “FML” in Kanye West as well as the mid-year hit “Pick up the phone” by Young Thug’s JEFFERY with Young Thug’s collaboration. Three months later, following the platinum certification of “Bitch Better Have My Money,” Scott’s second studio album appeared.
Titled Trap Birds Sing McKnight in “Pick Up the Phone” following a lyric by Quavo, the dreamy, primarily mid-tempo set featured a score and contributions from André 3000, Kid Cudi, and Kendrick Lamar, among others. It went up directly to the top of the Billboard 200. In his third LP Scott appeared on a variety of tracks, including SZA (Love Galore), Drake (“Portland”), Miguel (“Sky Walker”), 2 Chainz (“4 AM”), and Trippie Redd (“Dark Knight Dummo”).
Scott’s own “Butterfly Effect” emerged in May 2017 during this barrage of hits and platinum quickly also went away. Seven months later, Jack Huncho, a complete collaborator with Quavo, reached the Billboard 200 at number three. In May 2010, Scott released “Watch,” a non-album title starring Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert then released Astroworld within three months, which he believed to be the proper follow-up to Rodeo.
The album, named after a demolished amusement park in Houston, made its debut with “Butterfly Effect” and was accompanied by a second single, “Sicko Mode.” Scott finished 2018 with several tunes of the album Wear Capes by Metro Boomin’s Not All Heroes.
Following collaborations with Young Thug and J. Cole on “the London” in 2019 and featured on “Antisocial” by Ed Sheeran, Scott released his own solo track “Highest in the Room.” JackBoys, a short collection including Scott’s Cactus Jack Records label artists, was published at the conclusion of the year. The release was later the first album in the 2020s. Another young thug, ‘Franchise,’ also featuring M.I.A., appeared on the Billboard 200 in September 2020.
