Donald Glenn Garlits was born on January 14th, 1932, in Tampa, Florida Donald Glenn Garlits. He is a professional race car driver from the United States as well as an engineer. Drag racing fans throughout the world refer to him as “Big Daddy” since he is widely regarded as the founder of the sport.

He was a pioneer in drag racing, inventing the rear-engine Top Fuel dragster in response to the loss of a foot he suffered in a car accident. As a result, the dragster’s fuel processing and rotating components were moved behind the driver, making it significantly safer.

Most mechanical components were positioned behind the driver, which gave him protection and gave him access to a wide range of safety devices in case of catastrophic mechanical failure or a fire. Garlits was an early proponent of the full-body Nomex driving suit, which included socks, gloves, and a balaclava for added fire resistance.

Don Garlits Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

During the quarter-mile, Garlits was the first drag racer to go over 170 mph (320 km/h). He also went over 180 mph (240 km/h) and 200 mph (320 km/h) in the 18 mile (0.20 km). As a result of his accomplishments, he has been inducted into numerous Halls of Fame and received numerous honors throughout his career. Many airbases and landing fields were deactivated in the central and western United States following World War II.

Drag racing would have been a blast on these old runways that had been abandoned. As early as 1954, Don Garlits built his first drag race car under an oak tree in his North Tampa backyard. He reworked a 1927 Ford Model T Roadster with the help of an arc welder and a cutting torch. He fitted a 1948 Mercury engine block, a 1939 Ford floor shift transmission, and a 1948 Ford differential and axle to make it a hot rod.

The early T-Bucket ran the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds, reaching a high speed of 93 mph in the process. In order to build his first rail-job dragster, he would take inspiration from this successful, formative roadster. To begin, he removed all of the body panels and repositioned the engine and drive axle such that the seat was behind the driving axle. (Mickey Thompson constructed a comparable design the same year.)

Big Daddy won his first NHRA race with this slingshot dragster in Lake City, Florida, at the NHRA Safety Safari (12.1 seconds, 108 mph). It took him another three years to break into the world of professional drag racing. Garlits was driving Swamp Rat XIII, better known as the Wynnscharger, a front-engined slingshot rail dragster, when it experienced a catastrophic collapse on March 8, 1970, at Lions Drag Strip.

He was forced to miss the rest of the season after the two-speed transmission Garlits was working on detonated, cutting off part of his right foot and severing the car in half just in front of the cockpit. Garlits described the incident like the way in an interview with Florida Trend: “I was racing a dragster when the transmission blew up on me on the final run in 1970, cutting off my foot and severing the car in half. When I was younger, I dreamed of building a championship-winning rear-engine automobile.

In my wheelchair, I’d wheel myself out to the shop in Seffner, where I’d cut metal on the band saw and assemble the components.” His new concept follows previous pioneer rear-engined dragster designers like Steve Swaja’s AA/Gas Wedge I from 1963 and Roger Lindwall’s Top Fuel Re-Entry from 1966, as well as Kent Fuller’s fuller Sidewinder III from 1969, who had a similar mishap to Garlits. T. C. Lemons and Connie Swingle helped him build his new automobile.

Garlits has a total of 17 championships under his belt, including ten from the American Hot Rod Association, four from the International Hot Rod Association, and three from the National Hot Rod Association. He had just turned 54 years old when he took home the final prize. He was victorious in 144 different national competitions. Garlits made a brief comeback in his professional life in 1998, and then again in 2003.

It was during the 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac in Atlanta, Georgia, in May 2003 that he last qualified for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. With his 71-year-old age, he placed 16th in the quarter-mile with a time of 4.788 seconds at 320.98% of the speed limit. At the 2003 Gatornationals, Garlits had set a personal best time of 323.04.

Mr. Garlits’ Summit Racing-Mono Winged Dragster finished second to Brandon Bernstein’s (son of racing legend Kenny Bernstein) Budweiser/Lucas Oil Dragster, which ran at 321.42 mph with a 0.079 reaction time, a 4.615 elapsed time, and a personal best of 4.737 seconds. When it was all said and done, the difference in time was less than 0.122 seconds.

On the grounds of his Ocala, Florida estate, Garlits runs the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. He can also be seen delivering commentary at racing events and expositions on ESPN and Speed Vision. Always concerned about driver safety, Garlits declared “I am 100 percent in favor of it” regarding NHRA’s proposal to shorten the Top Fuel and Funny Car races from the traditional quarter-mile to 1,000 feet, also suggesting that he would support a ban on rev limiters and a return to a 70/30 rule after the death of Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta.

He’s changed his mind since then. As recently as September of 2009, Garlits returned to stock car racing at the Indianapolis Raceway Park’s U.S. Nationals, driving a specially built 2009 Dodge Challenger. He ran for Florida’s 5th Congressional District as the Republican Party’s nominee in 1994. Karen Thurman, the incumbent Democrat, defeated him.
