‘The White Zulu’, Johnny Clegg was a South African musician born on June 7, 1953, and died on July 16, 2019, in Johannesburg, South Africa. His innovative, ethnically integrated musical collaborations in the late 20th century made a powerful statement against apartheid, which separated black and white people and traditions in South Africa. ‘The White Zulu’ was a popular nickname for Clegg.
In his childhood, his mother took him to her native Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where she met and married a South African reporter. After thereafter, the family went to Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to his musical background, Clegg grew up in a politically liberal household. Clegg studied anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand when he was a young adult, and he taught there for several years after earning his master’s degree.
At the university, he had the opportunity to develop both his intellectual and practical participation with the local Zulu population’s arts and culture. In the 1970s, he gave up his teaching job to pursue music full-time, with the ultimate goal of becoming a music professor.Clegg forged a friendship with Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu migrant labourer and street musician in Johannesburg, in the following years.
During his time in Mchunu Clegg was exposed to the Zulu language and traditional music, as well as the colourful dance techniques that subsequently formed a staple of his shows. Initially, Clegg and Mchunu played as a duo before forming Juluka (Zulu for “sweat”). ‘Universal Men’ was Juluka’s first album, released in 1979, and it explored the life of migrant labourers who live and work in the city but are isolated from their family and homes. Musically, the CD combined Zulu music with diverse European traditions, resulting in a synthesis. As time went on, the sound of the albums became more and more integrated.
Clegg became known as “Le Zoulou Blanc” (“The White Zulu”) in France in the early 1980s, as well as gaining a large local and international following. When apartheid reigned in South Africa, music performed by mixed (Black and white) bands or that merged Black and white genres was banned from the radio. When Juluka’s music was first released, it was mostly performed live, which, especially in South Africa, sometimes led to police interactions.Clegg subsequently embarked on a solo career .That year Clegg embarked on a global farewell tour, called the Final Journey, and the last concert was held in 2018.
However, advocating an array of humanitarian causes, including HIV/AIDS awareness. Clegg received numerous international honours for both his music and his philanthropic work.A South African Story (2003) and One Life (2004) were among Clegg’s solo releases (2007). He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and underwent surgery to remove the tumour. King of Time was his first release after seeking therapy.
He embarked on a farewell tour that year called the Final Journey, and his final concert took place in 2018. Most of Clegg’s apartheid-era songs were deleted from his repertoire after the formal end of apartheid in 1994. His musical activism continued, however, with him pushing for a variety of humanitarian causes, including HIV/AIDS awareness and the prevention of the spread of HIV. Numerous international awards were bestowed upon Clegg as a result.
