Born in Bromley, England, Quentin Leo Cook joined the Housemartins pop-group in Hull on July 31, 1963 and replaced Founding Member Ted Key. Following the group division in 1988, Cook became involved in the blossoming house scene in combination with producers Tim Jeffrey and J.C. Reid, forming Pizzaman at the end of the decade. Three top 40 hits were produced together (Trippin in Sunshine, Sex on the Streets, and Happiness) before Cook split off and recorded in the early 90’s with identically designed equipment, Freak Power and Beats International.
During the next few years he shut down most of his previous production operations to focus on his solo project Fatboy Slim, which began with a trio of individuals and the full-length Better Living Through Chemistry. Cook was also invited to offer his remixing skills to the proto-electronic classic “E.V.A.), published as a 12” and the CD single in 1997, by Jean-Jacques Perrey. Cook has also recorded Skip to My Loops, a popular studio tool that sports a blend of sample-fitted drum loops, analogue squelches and a wide range of sounds, as well as his FBS work.
In early 1998, his remix of Cornershop’s “Brimful of Asha” was number one on the British charts for several weeks. The second LP, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby, was anxiously anticipated by Fatboy Slim later that year. It was released platinum in the United States and spawned four worldwide successes, most notably “The Rockafeller Skank” and “Praise You,” which also had a video created by Spike Jonze that won three MTV Video Music Awards and two Grammys nominations.
Cook created several mixed albums, including the inaugural Radio 1, Essential Selection compilation, Volume 1 and his own Boutique on the Floor. The latter was released in the United States in early 2000 to help fans resist waiting for his third album, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, which arrived in the fallIn 2002, two mix CDs – Live on Brighton Beach and Big Beach Boutique II – were released. In 2003, the prominent British TV presenter Zöe Ball, Cook and his wife divorced for a short time.
The breakup was a major impact on the 2004 Palookaville, still the most laid back and sombre Fatboy Slim album. The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder debuted in 2006, with several noteworthy remixes. In 2008, Cook stated that he would withdraw the name Fatboy Slim and create a new project, the Brighton Port Authority (or, for short, BPA), a collective with musical concept artists like David Byrne, Iggy Pop, Dizzee Rascal, Martha Wainwright and many others. In 2008, BPA released the track “Toe Jam.”
The following year the brand Fatboy Slim continued to emerge, such the Dance Bitch mix of CDs. In the meantime, Cook published I Think We’re going to need a bigger ship under the BPA alias. His following effort, published in 2010 as Fatboy Slim, includes production work, cooperation and co-billing with Byrne for the release Here Lies Love of the Imelda Marcos theme. In 2011, he continued to tour the world, and in 2012 he was requested to attend the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.
The following year Cook earned a U.K. Top Ten success with “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat,” featuring Riva Starr, Beardyman vocals, and a Calvin Harris remix. He continued leading festival stages and released remix sets during the following years. In 2017, there were two singles “Where U Iz” and “Boom F**king Boom” (featured by Beardyman). The Best of Fatboy Slim has been updated in 2019. The next year, Eats Everything was released by the minimalist club banger “All the Ladies.”
