Bananarama encompassed so much of the bespangled surplus of the 80s that at least one part of the decade was defined. The trio of Keren Woodward, Sarah Dallin and Siobhan Fahey at the start of her career were post-Punk Renegades, who redefined the sound of the girl group for the new wave era. Early on, they obtained Terry Hall’s assistance. The lanky, laconic vocalist Specials has hired them as vocal backup for his trio Fun Boy Three, ‘It’s not What You Do’ (it’s the way you do it) and ‘Really Saying Something’ early smashes.
Both covers were placed in the British Top Ten in 1982, creating the foundation for Bananarama’s very own “Shy Boy” breakthrough. The group built a significant support in the US dance clubs, which helped to make their single “cruel summer” a top ten smash in 1984 and laid the foundations for the international “Venus” blockbuster in 1986. “Venus” increased the dance links amongst Bananarama, which not only enhanced the group’s great worldwide smash in 1987 with “I Heard a Rumour” but also maintained it alive throughout the decades.
Fahey quit in 1988, but Woodward and Dallin continued and gained the Guinness Book of World Records’ certificate as the world’s successful female band by building up huge numbers of singles in the UK and around the globe. The genesis of Bananarama stems in the bond between the friends since childhood, Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin. Dallin met Siobhan Fahey while studying journalism at London College of Fashion.
All three females took part in a punk and new wave movement in London, which is how Woodward and Dallin became friends with Paul Cook, the Sex Pistols drummer. For Woodward, Dallin and Fahey, Cook produced a demo – the cover of Black Blood’s “Aie a Mwana,” which was published as a single by the Indie Demon Records. “Aie a Mwana” became an Indie smash and helped Bananarama reach a deal in Decca and also won the attention of Terry Hall, the former lead singer of the Fun Boy Three Specials.
Hall had Bananarama guest on Fun Boy Three’s Second Single “It Ain’t What You Do (It’s the Way You Do It). “It’s not What You Do” became a major hit in the United Kingdom in 1982, with number 4 highlights and Bananarama becoming stars. “Really Saying Something” – one song, which billed bananarama with Fun Boy Three “It’s not What You Do” – followed swiftly in 1982, reaching the top five in the U.K. Charts. “Shy Boy” provided the trio another top ten U.K. success and anchored Deep Sea Skiving, their 1983 debut.
The album spawned yet another big single, the “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” cover by Steam. The group was modestly successful in 1985 with “Do Not Disturb” but returned with their third album, True Confessions, in 1986. Its lead single, a Stock, an Aitken & Waterman remake of the 1969 smash “Shocking Blue” in “Venus,” gave Bananarama the first U.S. hit, and toped the Billboard’s Dance Chart and charts in Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Netherlands at eight.
None of the other True Confessions singles came close to recreating that success, but the Wow of 1987 gave Bananarama another International Rumor Smash. “Love in the First Degree” became also a top ten hit in Great Britain with a silver certification. In the mid-1990s, bananarama entered a dormant spell. Their following album, I Found Love, was only released in Japan; it was published under the title Ultra Violet in North America, Europe and Australia. In 2001, the French label M6 Interactions published Exotica, but there was no other record.
During that time, Bananarama kept on appearing on television in the UK with occasional shows, but only in 2005 when Drama became their first album to be released in the UK since 1993 did they start a full return. The album’s first song “Move in My Direction,” peaked at 14 with “Look on the Floor” at 26. Bananarama came back with Viva in 2009, who had “Love Comes” small hit. The Now or Never EP was published in 2012. For a reunion tour in 2017, Fahey joined Bananarama; captured via a live album and a home film in July 2018. Before Bananarama recorded In Stereo, the first full-length album of the duo in a decade, Fahey left the band in April 2019.
