She joined the American Opera Center in Juilliard between 1983 and 1987, and met Beverley Johnston, a voice coach she was to continue her career. Fleming also remembered the year she spent with a Fulbright Scholarship learning Lieder with Arleen Augér. She received the Auditions and the George London Prize of Metropolitan Opera and the Eleanor McCollum Concours in Houston in 1988. In 1988, Fleming sung the Countess at the Houston Grand Opera in Mozart’s “Die Nozze di Figaro,” made her debut as Mimi in La bohème at the New York Opera in 1989, and her debut as a Covent Garden at Cherubini’s Medea at a later date that year.
She debuted Met in 1991, making her an acknowledged feature in Figaro’s The Marriage, in order to provide Felicity Lott an unconditional role. Countess was her first part at the Vienna State Opera (1993) and Glyndebourne, in San Francisco (1991). (1994). She debuted as Donna Elvira at La Scala in 1993 and performed Eva at the Bayreuth Festival in 1996. She has continued in the greatest opera houses and concert halls worldwide since then and continues to broaden her repertoire.
Among her roles she has been honoured by are: the Alcina and Rodelinda of Handel; the Armida and Rossini, Violetta, Manon, Thaïs, Tatyana and Rusalka; and the Marschallin, Daphne and Arabe and Capriccio Countess. Her part in Corigliano’s The Ghosts ofversailles was created in 1991 by Rosina, in Conrad Susa’s Dangerous Liaisons by Madame Tourvel in 1994, in André Previn’s A Streetcar, named Desire in 1998, as well as in Blanche DuBois in 1998.

In 1996, 1999, 2010, and 2013 she was nominated for the 12 Grammy Awards for her numerous recordings, both on cd and DV. she won four. Fleming has recorded contemporary pop songs, jazz and movie soundtracks, as well as her work in classical repertoire.
She has presented a range of TV and radio stations such as The Metropolitan Opera, Live, and the Lincoln Center for PBS. Her honours include the Swedish Polar Price (2008), an Honorary Membership at the Royal Academy of Music (2003), and 2003 Honorary Doctorate at Juilliard School as Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government (2005).
She was awarded President Barack Obama’s National Arts Medal in 2012. Fleming’s mid-career actions continued to exhibit vigour in conventional channels, but she also used her expertise in vernacular music while largely avoiding “crossover” albums. Her roles include Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello at the Covent Garden in London in 2005 and the New York Metropolitan Opera in 2008-2009.
In 2013, her albums featured Richard Strauss’s Ariadne, released on DVD by Decca on Naxos from Baden-Baden, Germany. Since 2003, she has published a total of 15 recordings, from conventional to jazz repertoire (Dark Hope, 2010, and the group of Björksongs on Distant Light, 2017) (Haunted Heart, 2005 and Love Sublime in 2006) to indie rock. In her pop and jazz recordings, Fleming disregarded typical operatic stylings. She is a memoir writer, The Inner Voice: A Singer Making.
