American journalist, activist, author, and podcast host Kai Wright is a multitalented individual.  After working as a copy editor at the New York Daily News, he went on to become a senior writer at The Root, a senior editor at City Limits, the editorial director at ColorLines and the features editor at The Nation. After that, Wright established himself as a go-to reporter at Type Investigations (which was formerly known as The Investigative Fund), where he covered topics such as racial and economic inequality as well as access to healthcare. At the same time, he was accepted into the Alfred Knobler Fellows program at The Nation Institute, which is the organization’s parent.

While Wright was working at The Root as a columnist and later as a senior writer, he also served as publications editor for the Black AIDS Institute. It was through this position that he rose to prominence in the field of HIV prevention. Before joining ColorLines in 2010, he worked as an editorial assistant for the publication City Limits, as a copy editor for the New York Daily News, and as a news reporter for The Washington Blade. After that, he was promoted to the position of editor-at-large for the publication.

He is credited with transforming the publication from a print journal that was published twice a month into a daily digital destination that has one million readers each and every month. It wasn’t until 2015 that Wright was finally convinced to become a features editor at The Nation, making it one of the few political magazines at the time to have people of color in senior leadership positions.

Wright was responsible for editing the features, investigative reports, and editorials of the magazine. Additionally, he assisted in the development of new talent and created new digital ventures. The publication looked to him to improve coverage in the areas of race and racial justice, inequality, labor, health, and sexuality, all of which fall within his areas of expertise.

Wright started hosting the podcast “The United States of Anxiety” in collaboration with WNYC Studios while he was working as the features editor at The Nation. Wright has been the host of the podcasts Indivisible, Caught: The Lives of Juvenile Justice, There Goes the Neighborhood, The Stakes, and United States of Anxiety since he became the managing editor at WNYC and the host of its narrative unit.

His writing has been published in a variety of outlets, including but not limited to Mother Jones, In These Times, Truthout, Common Dreams magazine, and Essence magazine. Wright was born in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, but he currently resides in the borough of Brooklyn, New York.
