John Vanbiesbrouck was born in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of three sons born to Robert Vanbiesbrouck, a Belgian immigrant mason, and his Italian immigrant wife, Sara. Robert Vanbiesbrouck is a bricklayer by trade. He grew up with two elder brothers, the eldest of them, Frank, was also a goaltender in juvenile hockey at the time of his birth. Vanbiesbrouck was inspired to become a goalkeeper as a result of his influence. John subsequently stated that he learned more about goalie simply by watching Frank than he could have learned from any coaching and that no one else had ever contributed more to his development as a player.
Vanbiesbrouck was the youngest of three brothers who grew up with him. The youngest of his three brothers, Frank, was a goaltender who competed in three seasons of junior-A hockey between 1974 and 1977. Julian, his other brother, was a left-winger for the University of Michigan and spent a brief period of time with the Toledo Goaldiggers of the International Hockey League. The brother of Vanbiesbrouck, Frank, was suffering from serious melancholy and suicidal thoughts while playing for the Rangers at the time.
Over the course of this period, John made several attempts to communicate with Frank, including flying separately from the team on road trips to check on him and chatting to him on a daily basis. Frank took his own life in 1993, despite his attempts to save others. Vanbiesbrouck described Frank’s death as “devastating,” and he stated that he “felt very empty” after Frank passed away. He added that his Christian faith and the Bible helped him get through the terrible period he was through.

Vanbiesbrouck joined the Rangers for the 1984–85 season and has been with them ever since. He was named to the NHL’s First Team All-Star team after winning the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender the following season. When the Florida Panthers acquired him as part of their 1993 NHL Expansion Draft, he had previously spent parts of 11 seasons with the New York Rangers.
As a result of his performance in Florida, he earned his 300th career victory, becoming only the 15th goaltender and only the second American goaltender in NHL history to accomplish this feat. At the time of his retirement, Vanbiesbrouck had amassed a career record that included 374 victories, 346 defeats, 119 ties, and 40 shutouts, making him the winningest American-born goaltender in history. He also tied Frank Brimsek for the most career shutouts by an American-born goaltender at the time of his retirement.

Vanbiesbrouck has represented the United States of America on a number of international occasions.. As a junior, he competed in the 1982 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and four IIHF World Championships. At the 1985 World Ice Hockey Championships, he was named to the Second All-Star team, which represented the United States.
In addition, he competed in two Canada Cup tournaments, where he recorded the lowest goals-against average (GAA) in 1987 and was the backup goaltender for the Americans during their second-place finish in the tournament in 1991. During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, he represented Team USA for the final time as a backup on the ice hockey team. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds hired him after his playing career to serve as their head coach and general manager for the next decade.
He resigned, though, because he was caught using a racial slur in reference to team captain Trevor Daley. As a broadcaster and in hockey-related enterprises, Vanbiesbrouck had a varied career. Vanbiesbrouck joined the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the Tier I minor United States Hockey League in 2013, where he served as general manager until his retirement in 2017. (USHL). As the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey, he would be responsible for choosing players for the United States national hockey teams. He was hired by the organization in 2018.
