Mullen was born on February 26, 1957, in New York, New York, and grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen district of Manhattan, which was under the control of the Gambino crime family at the time of his birth. Between 1980 and 1997, he played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the St. Louis Blues, the Calgary Flames, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Boston Bruins. As a part of three Stanley Cup championship teams, he won with the Calgary Flames in 1989 and with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and 1992, respectively. Mullen began his coaching career in 2000, first as an assistant coach in Pittsburgh and then as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a brief period of time.
From 2007 through 2017, he worked as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers. Mullen, an undrafted player, was an all-star for the Boston College Eagles before turning professional in the Blues’ organization after being released by the team. As a member of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, he was named the Central Hockey League (CHL) rookie of the year in 1980 and the CHL’s most valuable player in 1981. As a member of the Calgary Flames, he was twice awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the league’s most gentlemanly player, as well as the NHL Plus-Minus Award.
During the 1988–89 season, Mullen was named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team and appeared in three NHL All-Star Games. Mullen has represented the United States National Team a number of times, including three appearances at the Canada Cup event. As a result of his efforts, he became the first American player to score 500 goals and accumulate 1,000 points in his professional career. As a result of Mullen’s services to the sport in the United States, he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1995. In 1998, he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
