Jeremy Shaffer Roenick was born on the 17th of January, 1970. He is a former professional ice hockey player from the United States who spent most of his career with the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the eighth round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, and he spent the next ten years with the team. Over the course of his 20-year NHL career, Roenick played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks, among other teams.
He has also represented the United States of America in a number of international tournaments. When he scored his 500th goal on November 10, 2007, he became only the third American-born player (the first two were Joe Mullen and Mike Modano) to do so. After leaving the NHL in 2009, Roenick joined NBC Sports as a hockey analyst in 2010. He remained with the network until he was fired in 2020 for making improper sexual remarks towards colleague Kathryn Tappen.
Roenick resided in Moorestown, New Jersey, while he was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. Roenick and his wife Tracy are the parents of two children: Brandi, a daughter, and Brett, a son. They are residents of Scottsdale, Arizona. A passionate equestrian rider, owner, and trainer named Tracy Roenick was named to the United States Equestrian Team’s Long List in 2001 after qualifying for the team as a rider.
Roenick is a member of the Republican Party. In a 2016 interview with Philadelphia radio station WIP-FM, he expressed his support for victorious presidential contender Donald Trump, despite the fact that he had earlier backed Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s campaign. Chris Calnan, Roenick’s nephew, was taken 79th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Roenick’s nephew is a forward with the Blackhawks.
In 2007, Roenick co-hosted two episodes of The Best Damn Sports Show…Period, which aired on Fox Sports Net. It is unclear whether or not this role would have continued if Roenick had not signed with the San Jose Sharks at the time of the appearance. In October 2009, TSN’s Off the Record announced that Roenick will be a regular contributor to the show, which began airing the following month.
He joined the NBC Sports Group in 2010 and is a studio analyst for the NHL coverage on NHL Live and NHL Overtime, as well as NBCSN’s pre-and post-game shows, alongside studio host Kathryn Tappen. Roenick has been a member of the NBC Sports Group since 2010. In addition to his regular work on NHL Live, Roenick has served as an Olympic hockey analyst at the previous three Winter Olympics, covering both the men’s and women’s games. The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were his first, and he served as Milbury’s counterpart as an analyst for the NBC family of networks for their coverage of the games.
Milbury started during the post-game program following the Canada–Russia quarterfinal that Russia brought their “Eurotrash game.” Milbury was asked the following question by co-host Bill Patrick: “Did you actually call someone a “Eurotrash”? Is it something that came out of your mouth?” When Roenick stated, “I’m surprised,” his countenance revealed his amazement “I was aware of it. I was aware of it.” During the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, Roenick served as an analyst for NBC, and after his two former teams, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers, battled for the Stanley Cup, he became overcome with emotion, barely holding back tears and addressing the victorious Blackhawks organization and their fans with the words, “Thank you.”
“For the kid who was there in 1992 and who was crying when I came off the ice after we lost Game 4 at Chicago Stadium, you had to wait 18 years before you could see me again. I hope you’re wearing a big smile on your face right now. Congratulations.” Upon being pressed for more information about his emotional state, Roenick appeared to have difficulty putting his feelings into words and responded simply, “I’m overjoyed and pleased with myself. I’m pleased with myself.” CBC’s reality show Battle of the Blades, which matches former NHL players with professional female figure skaters to compete in a pairs figure skating competition, revealed in September 2010 that Roenick would serve as a frequent judge on the second season of the show.
Roenick also earned prominence in popular culture when he was mentioned by Vince Vaughn in the 1996 picture Swingers. A scene from the film shows Vaughn’s character playing a video game of ice hockey against an opponent, and he tells his opponent: “You know, it’s not so much me as Roenick; he’s good…” When asked if he had ever spoken with Vaughn about the line from the film, Roenick replied, “I haven’t.” “He was actually a great fan of mine because he used to come to my games and watch me play.
He informed me that he cast me in the film solely out of respect for me. And in everything he does, he makes an effort to include me in everything. In the movie Wedding Crashers, he went by the fictitious name of Jeremy. That was a really cool experience. He’s a tremendous fan of mine and an all-around kind guy. He’s a really kind guy.” Roenick has also been in a number of television shows as an actor, most recently in a cameo role on an episode of Go On, which aired on NBC on September 25, 2012. He has also appeared in episodes of Leverage, Ghost Whisperer, two episodes of Hack, and two episodes of HBO’s Arliss, among other shows.
