Chelios was reared by his parents, Gus and Susan Chelios, in Chicago, Illinois, where he was born on January 25, 1962. Evergreen Park, Illinois, was where they lived. As a student at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, he also attended Mira Mesa High School in California. No American colleges sought Chelios out since he couldn’t play ice hockey in his home state of California during his senior year of high school. The only NCAA Division I hockey team west of the Rockies, United States International University, offered him a scholarship.
As a freshman at the University of Michigan in 1979, Chelios quickly recognized that he was in the wrong place because he was competing against much larger and more experienced junior hockey players. He has eventually kicked off the team and contemplated quitting the sport altogether. Instead, Chelios went to Canada to try his luck with Junior B teams, but he was twice cut and had to borrow money from strangers one year to travel home to California. Chelios hit rock bottom in Canada.
A few years later, he remarked, “I wasn’t much bigger or better than the other guys, so they weren’t going to pick a kid from America when they could have a local person.” A year after returning, Chelios had gained three inches and 40 pounds in muscle mass. During the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the Montreal Canadiens. In his previous season, he appeared in just 54 games with the Moose Jaw Canucks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, scoring 87 points and accruing 175 penalty minutes.
After being drafted, Chelios spent two successful seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was selected to represent the United States at the 1982 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship as one of the best college players in the country. All-tournament and second WCHA all-star teams were part of his 1983 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship team for the Wisconsin Badgers. Sarajevo, Yugoslavia hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, and Chelios was a part of the United States squad that competed.
For the Canadiens, he appeared in 12 regular-season games and 15 playoff games. He was a member of the U.S. squad that competed in the 1984 Canada Cup. While growing up, Chelios’ father established a chain of Greek eateries in Chicago, Illinois. Gus changed the spelling of the surname from its original “Tselios” form. At the end of 1977, after his father left a failing Chicago business to build a restaurant outside San Diego, his family relocated to Poway, California. For years, he was an admirer of the Chicago Blackhawks, but he also had an undying love for the Chicago Bears’ legendary linebacker Dick Butkus.
Before moving to California, Chelios went to Mount Carmel Senior High School in Chicago, where he completed his prep work before attending Mira Mesa Senior High School in San Diego. In 1987, Chelios and Tracee tied the knot. They first met at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, when they were both undergraduates. In addition to their four children, Dean, Jake, Caley, and Tara were born (born 1996). In 2006, Cranbrook-high Kingswood’s school hockey team won the Michigan Division III state championship thanks to two power-play goals from Dean Chelios.
In Bensenville, Illinois, Dean played for the Chicago Steel of the USHL. He last played in Wichita, Kansas, for the Wichita Thunder in 2016. The Chicago Steel selected Jake 49th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft, and he joined his brother at Michigan State University the following fall. A Detroit Red Wings organization team called the Grand Rapids Griffins, Jake is a defenseman like his father. As a sports reporter for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Caley graduated from Northwestern University in 2010.
When it comes to National Hockey League history, he is one of the most experienced players in the league and a three-time Stanley Cup winner. It’s safe to say that Chelios has been a member of several NHL teams over the course of his career. He was NHL’s oldest active player and second-oldest all-time when he was called up from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves to play for Atlanta’s Thrashers in the 2009–10 season.
Chelios had played the most games of any active NHL player and was the last player from the 1981 NHL Entry Draft still active. For defensemen, Chelios currently holds the NHL record for most games played, eighth overall with 1,651 games, holds the record for most playoff games played with 266, and is tied with Gordie Howe for the most NHL seasons played with 26. After missing the playoffs only once (1997–98), he made his 24th appearance in the playoffs on May 1, 2009. Also, Chelios has the postseason record for the most losses, with 117.
Although he lost just one Game 7 in his career, 3-2 overtime loss in 1985 Adams Division Finals versus Nordiques. It was announced in 2017 that Chelios was one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players.” Chelios has Greek ancestry. His cousin, Nikos Tselios, is a former first-round choice of the Carolina Hurricanes who also played professional hockey. Hockey’s Hall of Fame officially welcomed Chelios on November 8th, 2013 with his induction. His name was added to the IIHF All-Time USA Team in 2020.
