Brett Hull was born on August 9, 1964, in the Canadian city of Belleville. In his father’s professional hockey career, Bobby played in both the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA) for a number of years (WHA). His mother, Joanne (McKay), was a professional figure skater in the United States, and she was the one who taught him how to skate. In addition to his three older brothers, Bobby Jr., Blake, and Bart, he has a younger half-sister named Michelle.
Bart was a member of the Canadian Football League, where he played professional football. His uncle Dennis was also a long-time member of the National Hockey League. Brett relocated to Vancouver with his mother and two younger brothers just a few months before his parent’s ugly divorce occurred in 1979. Following the divorce, Hull was no longer close to his father, though the two did communicate on occasion.
Hull is currently married to his second wife, Darcie, and they live in Nashville. He has three children from his first marriage to Alison: a boy, Jude, and two girls, Jayde and Crosby, the youngest of whom is Crosby. Jude, like his father and grandpa, is a hockey player, albeit he has chosen to specialize as a goaltender and is a student at St. Olaf College. Jayde is currently a student at Colgate University. Hull has been involved with the operation of restaurants on two separate occasions throughout his professional life.
In addition to owning two restaurants in St. Louis while playing for the Blues, he collaborated with Mike Modano and others to open a restaurant in Dallas, which was known as “Hully and Mo Restaurant and Tap Room,” after his playing career ended. Brett Hull Hockey, a video game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System released in 1995, was named after him. Hull was a co-owner of the St. Louis Bandits, a junior hockey team in the North American Hockey League that played in St. Louis, Missouri.

While playing in the National Hockey League for more than two decades, Brett Hull amassed 1,391 points while playing for five different teams (the Calgary Flames, the St. Louis Blues, the Dallas Stars, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Phoenix Coyotes).
His 741 career goals rank him third all-time in the league’s history. The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy was awarded to him in his first full season with the Blues (1988-89) when he scored 41 goals in 61 games. The following season was the beginning of three consecutive seasons in which he scored 70 or more goals, including a career-high 86 goals in 1990-91, which earned him the Lester B.
Pearson Trophy as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s most valuable player. Having played 11 seasons in St. Louis, Hull joined the Dallas Stars in the summer of 1998, where he contributed to the team’s Stanley Cup victory the following year.
After three seasons in Dallas, Hull became a free agent and signed with the Detroit Red Wings prior to the 2001-02 season, where he went on to win his second Stanley Cup the following spring. Among his international accomplishments, Hull assisted the United States to win a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics and finished first in the tournament scoring when Team USA won the World Cup of Hockey in 1996, his first of two World Cup appearances.
He also competed in the 1991 Canada Cup and the 1986 IIHF Men’s World Championship, among other events. The nine-time NHL All-Star played two seasons (1984-86) at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he scored 52 goals in his sophomore season and was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award during his sophomore season. Since then, no college player has ever scored more goals in a single season.
