On August 1, 1953, Robert Cray was born in Columbus, Georgia, while his father was stationed at Fort Benning. Cray began his musical career when a student at Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia. He formed his first band, The One-Way Street, when he was there. His family eventually made their home in Tacoma, Washington. In Lakewood, Washington, he attended Lakes High School.
Tomato Records released Cray’s album Who’s Been Talkin’ in 1980. Bad Influence and False Accusations, two albums released by HighTone Records in the mid-1980s, were modestly successful in the United States and Europe, where he was establishing a name as a live performer. With his hero Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland, he released the album Showdown! in 1985.
BIOGRAPHY:
Cray was signed to Mercury Records and released his fourth album, Strong Persuader, in 1986, which won a Grammy Award and featured the crossover single “Smoking Gun,” which helped him gain a wider audience and name recognition. In 1986, he recorded with Ted Hawkins under the moniker “Night Train On John Lee Hooker’s album Boom Boom, Cray had the opportunity to play the guitar solo in the song “Same Old Blues Again.” He also appears on Hooker’s The Healer album, where he plays a guitar solo on the song “Baby Lee.” On the title track of Hooker’s 1992 album Mr. Lucky, the complete Robert Cray Band backs him up, with Cray playing lead guitar, singing, and bantering with Hooker throughout the song.
The band also featured on two songs from B.B. King’s 1993 duet album Blues Summit: a duet between King and Cray called “Playin’ With My Friends,” written by Cray and Dennis Walker expressly for the project, and a duet between King and John Lee Hooker called “You Shook M”. Records released Cray’s album Who’s Been Talkin’ in 1980.
