He shares the record for the most individual NCAA championships with Ben Crenshaw, who has three. In 1990, Mickelson guided the Sun Devils to their first NCAA championship. He was a 16-time tournament winner throughout his collegiate career.
Mickelson became only the second collegiate golfer in history to receive first-team All-American honours each of his four years. He also became the first left-handed golfer to win the US Amateur title in 1990, defeating high school teammate Manny Zerman 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final at Cherry Hills, Colorado.
In January 1991, Mickelson won his first PGA Tour event, the Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, which was possibly his best accomplishment as an amateur. He is one of the rare amateur players to win a PGA Tour event. He was only the sixth amateur to win a tour tournament at the age of 20, and it had been over five years since Scott Verplank won the Western Open in August 1985.
Doug Sanders (1956 Canadian Open) and Gene Littler are two other players who have accomplished this (1954 San Diego Open). Mickelson was one stroke ahead with five holes to play when he hit a triple-bogey and fell three back. The leaders in front of him subsequently faltered, and he won by a stroke after birdying 16 and 18. It is currently the most recent amateur victory on the PGA Tour.
Mickelson won the Masters Tournament at Augusta, Georgia, in April of that year as the lowest amateur. He participated in many tour events as an amateur in 1992, using his two-year PGA Tour exemption from the Tucson victory, but he did not make the cut.
Mickelson was hoping to make history by becoming the first player on the PGA Tour Champions to win his first three tournaments. In the Cologuard Classic, however, he came up short, placing T-20 with a 4 under par score. Mickelson led Brooks Koepka by one stroke with one day to play at the PGA Championship in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, in May 2021.
He won by two strokes over Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen in the final round, becoming the oldest major champion at the age of 50. Thousands of fans surrounded Mickelson as he headed down the fairway after an outstanding second shot from the left rough on the 18th hole, with him tipping his cap and giving the audience the thumbs up as they roared.
However, the large crowds trapped playing partner Brooks Koepka, who struggled to reach the green to finish the hole. Mickelson emerged from the crowd and two-putted for par to finish the tournament at 6-under par, two strokes ahead of the pack.
Mickelson won the PGA Tour Champions in October 2021 for the third time in his career. Mickelson defeated Miguel ngel Jiménez in the first Constellation Furyk & Friends in Jacksonville, Florida, with a final round 4-under par 68. Mickelson won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix, Arizona, in November 2021, with a six-under-par 65 in the final round.
Mickelson’s fourth victory on the PGA Tour Champions came in his sixth appearance. Many people describe Mickelson’s playing style as “aggressive” and “very sociable” when he competes. His approach to difficult shots (poor lies, obstacles) is dangerous.
Mickelson is known for his powerful but occasionally inaccurate driver, but it is his excellent short game, particularly his daring “Phil flop” shot, in which a big swing with a high-lofted wedge against a tight lie flies a ball high into the air for a short distance, that has garnered the most praise. Mickelson is regularly in the top ten in terms of scoring, and he recently led the PGA Tour in birdie average.
