Kelly was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in East Brady around 60 miles northeast. After 3,915 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 1 interception in his work, he was eminent at East Brady High School and achieved all-state honors. Kelly played in the Big 33 Football Classic following his senior year. Kelly also played high school basketball, scoring more than 1,000 points with six more games.
As a senior, he led East Brady to the state’s quarterfinals in Pennsylvania Class ‘A,’ averaging 23 points and 20 rebounds. The former U.S. football quarterback, James Edward Kelly, played the National Football League (NFL) with the Buffalo Bills for 11 seasons. He also played two seasons with the US Football League’s Houston Gamblers (USFL).
With the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, one of the six quarterbacks, Kelly was selected as 14th overall in the Bills. Instead, he signed with the Gamblers and didn’t play for the Bills until the USFL collapsed in 1986. Kelly led one of the biggest NFL juggernauts with the “K-Gun” style recognized by his no-huddle shotgun formations. He helped led Bills from the 1990s to the 1993 season to a record of four straight Super Bowls, but the club lost every single match.
In addition, Kelly was named five Pro Bowls and garnered All-Pro honors in the first team in 1991. Kelly is one of only three players who, together with his teammates Thurman Thomas and Bruce Smith, have retired his number by the Bills. In 2002, he was brought to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Kelly was promised a bachelor’s degree in College football by coach Joe Paterno at Penn State University, but Paterno wanted Kelly as a linebacker, not a quarterback.
He continued to work at Miami University, where he played a vital part in developing the program to become one of the best in the country. Kelly completed his Miami career with 376 finishes in 676 attempts at 5,228 yards and 33 touchdowns. He was introduced to the Hall of Fame of the University in 1992. Kelly threw 9 842 yards and 83 contacts down in the two seasons of offensive coach Mouse Davis, completing 63 percent, with an average of 8.53 meters per 45 trial interceptions.
In 1984, when he set a league record with 5,219 yards passing and 44 touchdown passes, he was the USFL MVP. Kelly’s USFL records have overshadowed those of the Doug Williams and Steve Young fellow quarterbacks. When the Houston Gamblers disbanded, Kelly went to the New Jersey Generals and became their quarterback inaugural. Kelly featured on an illustrated cover with a helmet of generals, but it crumbled before he snapped with the generals.
Kelly threw three touchdown passes in the game’s recent Gambler drives, including what ended out to be the winner, Ricky Sanders’ 39-yard strike. The Express thought they’d won the game, especially after Troy West took a Kelly Pass off and handed it back for a touchdown of 42 yards. The players gained the ball back and just two games were needed to score, as Kelly scored Richard Johnson with a pass which concluded with a 52-yard score. It took less than a minute to drive.
The defense of the Gamblers was obliged to go ahead, and Kelly this time found recipient Vince Courville for a 20-yard strike. The drive was supported by a terrible punt by Express punter Jeff Partridge, that only netted 16 yards and enabled the players to take on the Express 43 yard.
Kelly led the “K-Gun” offense from Bills, which was a fast tempo offense named after Keith McKeller, who had refused the right to quickly replace defenses (the NFL later changed the rules in response to this to allow opposing defenses time to change formations under no-huddle situations, but this applied only if the offense made personnel substitutions).
This offensive program required several training calls in a huddle that would make it possible for the Bills to escape the next huddle after each play, instead of lining up for the next game in which Kelly would read the defense and play. This led to defensive communication disruptions and established the Bills in the 1990ies as one of the most effective and dangerous offenses in the NFL, which led Buffalo to four straight appearances in the Superbowl.
