Edward Emil Kranepool is a former professional baseball player from the United States of America. The New York Mets were his only Major League Baseball team for his entire career. A first baseman, he also saw time in the outfield. His baseball and basketball careers began while he was a student at James Monroe High School in the Bronx. As a 17-year-old amateur free agent, Kranepool was signed in 1962 by Mets scout Bubber Jonnard.

Despite a combined.301 batting average at three levels of the Mets’ minor league system in 1962, Kranepool was called up to the majors in September of his first pro season. To put it another way, he was six years younger than the next youngest Met from ’62, a result of the Mets’ disastrous decision to select mostly older veterans in the expansion draught. In a 9–2 loss to the Chicago Cubs at the Polo Grounds on September 22, 1962, he made his major league debut wearing number 21 as a defensive replacement for Gil Hodges at first base

 Ed Kranepool Biography/Wiki

To begin with, he struck out in his only at bat against Cubs second baseman Ken Hubbs. In his first start the following day, on September 23, he batted one for four with a double and went 0 for 4. Marv Throneberry at first base and Duke Snider in right field split playing time with Kranepool in 1963. To make matters worse, on May 5th, the Mets’ Triple A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, decided to demote Throneberry to their Triple A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, due to his mediocre performance at the plate .143 batting average and one run batted in in 23 games).

Due to first basemen Harkness, Dick Smith, and Frank Thomas, Kranepool spent most of the 1964 season in right field. Joe Christopher was batting.303 on May 24 and had won the starting right field job. When Kranepool was demoted to Buffalo for batting at.139, Kranepool was given the right field job, and Kranepool was demoted. When Kranepool was called up to rejoin the Mets after just 15 games with the Bisons, his.352 batting average and three home runs earned him a promotion. Kranepool played all 18 innings of a doubleheader on his last day with the Bisons before being called to Shea Stadium, where the Mets were playing two games the following day.

Milwaukee Braves pitcher Warren Spahn was acquired by the New York Mets prior to the 1965 season. To make room for Spahn’s No. 21, Kranepool switched to No. 7 instead of No. 21. Kranepool batted.287 at the halfway point of the season, with seven home runs and 37 RBIs. Although he did not play, he was selected as the Mets’ sole representative on the All-Star team for the National League in 1965. However, the Mets lost 112 games and finished in 10th and last place in the National League.

On May 21, 1969, the Mets won their third game in a row for the first time in franchise history, giving them a.500 winning percentage 36 games into the season. Immediately after, the Mets went on a five-game losing streak, which dropped them to fourth place in the newly reorganised National League East division. Next, New York had a winning streak of 11 games and Kranepool hit two home runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A seven-game gap separated the Mets from the Chicago Cubs at the end of their streak and the Mets finished second.Kranepool, who played first base with Milner and Dave Kingman in 1974 and 1975, batted.300 in consecutive seasons.

Upon her death on October 4, 1975, Mets owner Joan Payson bequeathed ownership of the team to her husband, Charles. Even though Joan was the driving force behind the Mets, many of her surviving family members did not share her passion for the team. M. Donald Grant, the baseball club’s chairman, was given control of baseball matters by Charles, who delegated his authority to his three daughters. There were no other Met players at the funeral of Mrs. Payson, as reported in an interview with Kranepool.Stockbroker and restaurateur Ed Kranepool now works for a credit card processing company.
