Dick Groat was born on November 4, 1930. He’s the former two-sport athlete (baseball and basketball) known as Major League Baseball Shortstop (MLB). He was designated the most valuable player in the 1960 League (primarily Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals) and won the batting titles with an average of 325 for World Championship pirates.

From 1956 to 1962, he paired up with second baseman Bill Mazeroski to make one of the most powerful combos of the game in Pittsburgh. Groat was signed just days after his Duke degree by Piratos’ general manager, Branch Rickey, where he was a two-time All-American basketball and baseball player. The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants were interested in him as well, but after a few miles off of Forbes Field, he always hoped to play for the pirates.

In June, he broke into the pirates, never played in the leagues, and beat 2,284 over the rest of the year. He then followed his basketball career before enlisting in the army for two years. The first time in the same year a single base won both titles, scoring 362 in baseball and averaging 35 points each game in basketball, he led Fort Belvoir Teams to World Army Championships.

Back in 1955, he beat the club second, with the leadoff hitter Bill Virdon noting his special prowess at the hit and run. That year, he was the first NL leader; Pitcher Roy Face commented that Groat was usually in the optimum position for various hitters, even though he had no good armor high speed. In 1956, in a season (520), he set the record for most of the time without a home race or a robbed base.

He batted 315 (sixth) in 1957, together with a career-high of 7 runs at home; he threw out the final hitter on 29 September that year against the Giants, finishing the last home game of the Giants ever on the Polo grounds.  In 1958, he hit back 300, leading the NL to putouts and doubles as the Pirates ended second, placing eighth for the first time since 1949. He led the NL again in 1959 in put-outs and doubles and made his first of five All-Star teams. During the following off-season he was almost traded for Roger Maris, but Manager Danny Murtaugh canceled the transaction.

Dick Groat Biography/Wiki

Groat was the first Pirates to be chosen MVP since Paul Waner in their last pennant year of 1927 and also the first right-hand Pirates to hit the batting crown since Honus Wagner in 1911. He lost a few weeks late in the season after a Lew Burdette fastball broke his wrist on 6 September. During the New York Yankees 1960 World Series, he tied Game 1 with a first-inning double and scored to give Pittsburgh the lead, won 6–4, with Groat turning a two-game to end.

On the 7th, he got an RBI single and scored in the eighth inning, with the pirates scoring five runs leading 9-7; in the next inning, the Pirates won the Series on the famous home run of Mazeroski. In 1961 Groat beat .275 and led the league in double plays together with Mazeroski. He batted 294 in 1962, finishing third in the doubles league (34), and led the NL in the rankings, assists, and doubles.

In November 1962 general manager Joe L. Brown transferred him to the Cardinals in exchange for Don Cardwell in order to strengthen the team’s score. Groat was seriously saddened by the deal, hoping to be a coach and ultimately manager after his retirement and cut off all contacts with the team until a 1960 champions’ meeting in 1990. In 1963, he took fourth place in the lead with an average .319 bat – only seven points behind Champion Tommy Davis – and collected 201 hits.

He also led the NL with 43 doubles and finished third with a lifetime high of 11 triples, behind Sandy Koufax he was the leader of the MVP vote. He battled for the Cardinals in 1964 in 292 and led the league again in assists and double-game plays and made his last All-Star team. He made the start of Bobby Richardson’s error at Game 4’s sixth start in the World Series against the Yankees and scored in 4-3 St. Louis’ win at Ken Boyer’s grand slam. Groat also tagged Mickey Mantle on a pickoff play in the third inning of the game.

He scored a 5–2 triumph in the 3-run 10th start of Game 5 and an RBI groundout in the final 7–5 win of Play 7. After hitting 254 in 1965, he was dealt in a six-player deal to the Philadelphia Phillies. He beat Phillies in 1965 and sold his contract to the Giant in June 1967 (now in San Francisco), finishing his career with an average of .156 in 44 games in the same year. In a 14-season career, Groat has made up an average of 2138 hits, 39 runs, 829 runs, 707 runs, 352 doubles, and 14 stolen bases for 1929 games.
