Ray Culp Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

Despite his young age, Culp signed with the Philadelphia Phillies’ Class D Appalachian League affiliate in Johnson City, Tennessee. There, he appeared in just four games, going 0-1 with a 5.29 ERA in 17 innings pitched. The following season, he split time between Asheville, in the Class A South Atlantic League, and Des Moines, in the Midwest League. was born on August 6, 1941 in Elgin, Texas, a small town about 25 miles east of Austin, to Raymond Leonard Culp Sr. and Melba Olive Cottle, who had been married for over 30 years.

Samuel and Mary Jo were Ray’s siblings. In addition to baseball and basketball at Stephen Austin High School, Ray became a local hero for his heroics on the baseball field. 1958, he led his team to the state championship with six postseason wins, including a no-hitter, and he went on to win 18 straight games in two seasons before losing 1-0 in the state tournament his senior year in 1959.Des Moines plays in the Class B Three-I League, while Jacksonville plays in the Class A South Atlantic League.

He had a good start for Asheville, but was demoted after three consecutive losses. His record for Asheville was 2-3 with an awful 9.00 ERA, and his record for Des Moines was 6-7 with 6.59 runs allowed per nine innings. He struggled at Williamsport of the Class A Eastern League (0-4, 10.23 in four starts) before being sent back to Des Moines and pitching poorly once more (6-12, 5.87). He had struggled in three minor-league seasons after the 1961 season, but he was still only 20 years old and the Phillies hadn’t given up on him.

Culp was tested again in 1962 at Williamsport, and he finally passed. Ray started 27 games and went 13-8 with a 3.20 ERA in his career. Outfielder Dick Allen helped Culp lead Williamsport to the league championship, but the team lost in the playoffs to Elmira. He was invited to pitch for Arecibo in the Puerto Rican winter league after his season ended. After his first few years in the minors, Culp explained that he was simply not ready to pitch, but had a pretty good year in 1962.

This left Culp out of options and he was brought to the major league spring training camp in 1963. Culp joined the Phillies after Dennis Bennett’s injury in the offseason. In his rookie season, Culp won three more games in relief before moving to the starting rotation, where he went 14-11 with a 2.97 ERA. 176 strikeouts ranked him eighth in the league; five shutouts ranked him fifth.

All-Star team selection, he pitched a scoreless fifth inning in Cleveland’s 5-3 victory over the National League. The Sporting News named Culp the National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year at the end of the season.Despite winning seven of eleven decisions, Culp’s ERA rose to 5.04 in 34 games in 1966, his worst season in the major leagues to date.

In his 11 starts, he struggled both when he was starting and when he was relieved. A number of other Phillies starters had a better and more consistent season, which led Culp to request a trade after the season ended. Culp entered the 1969 season as the staff’s ace, after barely making the rotation in 1968. To increase offence after 1968’s poor showing by batters, pitchers faced a smaller strike zone and a lower mound.

As a rookie in 1971, Ray defeated the Yankees 3-1 at Fenway Park. In his next few starts, he was hammered hard, posting a 6.37 ERA in five starts in April. Pitching well all summer, he began with a 1-0 shutout of Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven on May 2. But he ended the season with four losses in September. 14-16 with a 3.60 ERA were Culp’s final stats in four seasons in Boston. Despite a sore elbow, Culp struggled mightily in 1972, coming in and out of the lineup. He had shoulder surgery in September and finished the season with a record of 8-8.

Red Sox skipper Alex Cora was removed from the 40-man roster in the fall. Mitzi, Sherri and Tammi were born to Culp and his high school sweetheart, Sharon, during his baseball career. As a result of their return home, they had three sons (Wes, Clint, and Cody). All of Culp’s sons played baseball, with Wes reaching the highest level, pitching for three years in the Atlanta Braves’ system.
