Colonel, USAF (Ret.) Frederick Drew Gregory is a former test pilot, NASA astronaut, and NASA Deputy Administrator. He grew up in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Anacostia High School. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Military Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy. Following helicopter school, he flew in Vietnam, changed to fighter aircraft, attended Navy Test Pilot School, and then conducted testing for both the Air Force and NASA as an engineering test pilot.
He earned a master’s degree in information systems from George Washington University.As the Challenger’s pilot, Colonel Frederick D. Gregory became the first African-American to fly a space shuttle in 1985. While serving as an astronaut, he was responsible for commanding three important missions from 1985 to 1991. In addition to his military service, Colonel Gregory was a jet test pilot before joining the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (NASA). Gregory served as NASA’s deputy administrator from 2002 to 2005, which was the second-highest administrative post in the agency.
