Donald Anthony Perkins born March 4, 1938 is a former fullback with the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League. He was a member of the University of New Mexico football team.Perkins, who was born and reared in Waterloo, Iowa, won eight letters at Waterloo West High School, four in football and four in track (sprinter). He was also a basketball player. By the time he was a junior, Perkins was the captain of the track team. Perkins attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he was a two-way player who played halfback and defensive back. He was named to the All-Skyline team three times and was named the Skyline Sophomore of the Year. He topped the country in kickoff returns in 1958. He was named to the third team of the All-American team in 1959.
Marv Levy, the eventual Hall of Fame coach at New Mexico, has said on multiple occasions that Perkins was one of the best players he ever coached. In his Hall of Fame induction speech in Canton, Ohio, he also mentioned him. The Dallas Cowboys were admitted to the NFL too late in November 1959 to participate in the 1960 NFL draught, so they signed Perkins to a personal-services deal worth $1,500 in bonus money and $10,000 in salary. This meant that if and when the Cowboys were given an NFL franchise, he would play for them. Despite the fact that he was taken in the ninth round of the NFL selection by the Baltimore Colts, the league honoured the contract and awarded the Cowboys a ninth-round draught

His ten career 100-yard games rank fourth among fullbacks, despite his height of 5 ft 10 in 1.78 mand weight of 204 pounds (93 kg). Perkins missed the whole 1960 season due to a broken foot (fifth metatarsal) sustained during training camp, thus he joined the Cowboys as a rooster in 1961.
