Leonard Michael Maltin is an American film critic, film historian, and author of several mainstream books on cinema, most of which center on sentimental and celebratory narratives. Maltin was born on December 18, 1950, in the United States. It is possible that his book of film reviews, Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, which was published annually from 1969 until 2014, is what brought him the most notoriety. Maltin was born in New York City to the singer Jacqueline (née Gould; 1923–2012) and Aaron Isaac Maltin (1915–2002), who was a lawyer and immigration judge. Maltin was the son of Jacqueline and Aaron.
Maltin came from a Jewish family and spent his childhood in Teaneck, New Jersey. In 1968, he received his diploma from Teaneck High School. At the age of 15, Maltin began his career as a writer by contributing to the publication Classic Images. He also edited and published his own fanzine called Film Fan Monthly, which was devoted to movies from the golden age of Hollywood. Maltin went on to publish articles in a variety of film journals, newspapers, and magazines after graduating from New York University with a degree in journalism. Some of these publications include Variety and TV Guide. Maltin also contributed reviews of jazz recordings to the publication Downbeat during the 1970s.
BIOGRAPHY:
Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide is a compendium of synopses and reviews that was published for the first time in September 1969. It received annual updates beginning in October 1987 and continued until September 2014, with each edition having the date of the following year. Maltin authored this work. The first editions of the book were published under the name Leonard Maltin’s Movie and Video Guide, but its original name was TV Movies. Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide is a spin-off volume that was published in 2005. This was done so that the main book could cover a greater number of titles that were released more recently.
The coverage of many films that were released no later than 1960 was moved into this volume. In addition to that, he is the author of a number of other books and works, such as Behind the Camera, which is an examination of cinematography; The Whole Film Sourcebook; Leonard Maltin’s Movie Encyclopedia; Our Gang: The Life and Times of the Little Rascals; and Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons. Maltin began his tenure as the film critic for the syndicated television show Entertainment Tonight on May 29, 1982. He held this position for the next 30 years. At one point, he lauded the Tournament of Animation that was taking place on the show.
In addition to that, he made an appearance on the Starz cable network, hosted his own syndicated radio program called Leonard Maltin on Video, and was a co-host on the syndicated television show Hot Ticket alongside the film critic from Boston, Joyce Kulhawik (the show was originally hosted by the personality and game show host from E!, Todd Newton). In addition, Maltin was the host of the television show Secret’s Out. Additionally, he was the driving force behind the Walt Disney Treasures collectable DVD line, which was launched in 2001 and he has continued to provide creative input and host the various sets since then. During the 2010 Independent Spirit Awards, Maltin was present.
Maltin was a member of the National Student Film Institute’s Advisory Board throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Maltin was elected to the presidency of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association in the middle of the 1990s, and he is currently a member of the advisory board of the Hollywood Entertainment Museum. Maltin was also a member of the teaching staff at the New School for Social Research in New York City for the better part of a decade. As of the academic year 2018, Maltin is a member of the faculty at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.
Maltin made a cameo appearance in the South Park episode titled “Mecha-Streisand,” in which he, Sidney Poitier, and Robert Smith battled the titular robot version of Barbra Streisand, which was modelled after Godzilla. Maltin also provided his voice for an episode of Freakazoid! titled “Island of Dr Mystico,” in which he played a character who was kidnapped by the orangutan henchmen of the show’s titular antagonist. The New Batch plays the role of a film critic who is attacked by the Gremlins after criticizing the first film in the Gremlins franchise.
This scene was based on events that actually took place, such as when Maltin wrote a negative review of the first movie because he thought it was cruel, which led to a rift in his friendship with the director Joe Dante. The scene was made fun of in a parody of Gremlins 2 that was published in Mad magazine Maltin was one of the few people to appear as a “guest star” on Mystery Science Theater 3000 during the show’s original run. He joined Pearl Forrester in tormenting Mike Nelson and the bots with the film Gorgo during an episode of Season Nine.
On the show, he was also made fun of for his rating of the movie Laserblast, which was 2.5 stars out of 5. After Mike, the Bots, and others have finished watching the film, they express surprise at the rating while Mike reads off a list of well-known movies to which Maltin gave ratings that are comparable to the one given to the film in question. Maltin has been the host of the podcast titled “Maltin on Movies” since the month of November 2014. It first aired on Paul Scheer’s Wolfpop network, which is no longer in operation, and comedian and actor Baron Vaughn served as a co-host on the show.
The two chose a topic primarily based on what was currently playing in theatres and then discussed three other films that were related to that topic. Within that category, they talked about one film that they both liked, one film that they both disliked, and one film that they thought was an excellent film that was less well-known within the category. Among the topics discussed were biopics, groundbreaking performances, and sequels. Maltin is a resident of the city of Los Angeles. He is the father of one daughter, Jessie, who also works with him, and he is married to the researcher and producer Alice Tlusty (his production company, JessieFilm, is named for her). Maltin disclosed in July 2018 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease approximately three and a half years prior to making the announcement.
