BIOGRAPHY:
He has referred to his musical style as “Philosophunk!” throughout the conversation. “I have a deep appreciation for artists such as Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, XTC, the Beatles, and others of their ilk. Those are the people who have had the most impact on me, but I also have a lot of respect for people like Stan Freberg, James Randi, Michael Shermer, and others like them. Therefore, it can be compared to both music and philosophy… My job is to condense the ethereal mists that permeate the cosmos.” Since he began his career as an independent musician in 1997, Hrab has released a total of six albums. As an independent musician, one of the strategies that Hrab employs is to personalize the album artwork and packaging for each of his releases. One comes in a DVD container, while another is housed in a tin box. “Each one stands out as a piece of art,” the author writes, “offering his admirers a legitimate reason to acquire the physical disc as merchandise, not just a music holder.” Two of his albums’ artwork and packaging were recognized with ADDY Awards.
In addition to his work as a solo artist, Hrab has contributed to the musical output of a great number of bands during the course of his career. Hrab served as the touring drummer for the Eric Mintel Quartet in 1998, during which time they also recorded one jazz CD together. The performance of “cool ’50s swing” that the band gave at the Kennedy Center and the White House Christmas dinner was undoubtedly the most memorable portion of this tour. In 2016, Hrab gave a concert titled “Greatest Hits” at the Ice House in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The concert featured string quartet arrangements of songs from five of Hrab’s albums.
Hrab gave a performance with the Rittenhouse String Quartet while the concert was going on. They collaborated to perform musical arrangements of Hrab’s songs that had been prepared by Veikko Rihu and Slau Halatyn. As part of the annual NECSS conference that took place in 2016 at the Katie Murphy Amphitheater located within the Fashion Institute of Technology, Hrab gave a performance of The Broad Street Score. On August 24, 2016, the performance had its debut in front of an international audience in Turku, Finland. Following his appearance on the podcast Skepticality Hrab received an invitation to attend Dragon Con from the show’s hosts in the year 2006.
There, he gave a performance and met a lot of podcasters who were interested in promoting his music after seeing him perform. He attributes the growing interest in his music all across the world to this exposure. “People in Australia and Singapore, who ought not to be familiar with who I am, have downloaded my music and purchased my records. This is entirely attributable to podcasts “Hrab stated. During the same period of time (the summer of 2006), Hrab was the host of a weekly program on the radio station that was affiliated with Lehigh University called The Geologic Radio Hour. It was categorized as “free-form eclectic,” and it aired at midnight on Tuesdays. It featured spoken word parts, as well as a variety of comic routines that Hrab had produced.
Hrab started his own podcast in February 2007, drawing from the knowledge he gained from the radio program as well as the connections he made in the podcasting industry in 2006. He was urged to do so by his buddy and producer Slau. Hrab was born in New Jersey and comes from a family that is of Ukrainian Catholic origin. His father, who also goes by the name George Hrab, is a musician and has been a member of a band called Tempo continuously since 1959.
