Formerly a contender for US president and mayor of New York City, Andrew Yang is now an entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, attorney, and non-profit leader. Eventually, Andrew became CEO of an education firm that went on to become number one in the country after working as a corporate lawyer for only five months, joining many start-ups, and even starting his own company.
He subsequently established Venture for America, an organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship across the country and bringing economic vitality to communities like Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, Birmingham, and St. Louis. The White House recognized Andrew as a Presidential Ambassador of Entrepreneurship and a Champion of Change for his role in growing the organization into a national nonprofit with annual revenues in the millions during the Obama administration.
BIOGRAPHY:
Andrew decided to run for president in late 2017 after witnessing the destruction wrought on American labor by automation and the fourth industrial revolution. The New York Times called Andrew a “longer than long shot” candidate, but he eventually made it to seven Democratic primary debates thanks to the support of his grassroots supporters, who call themselves the “Yang Gang.” Andrew ended up outpolling and outlasting six senators, four governors, three members of Congress, two mayors, and one secretary.
As an activist, Andrew has made his cause a political reality by founding the nonprofit Humanity Forward, which has successfully lobbied Congress to provide billions of dollars in financial relief and stimulus payments to millions of Americans in need. Yang was initially written off as a long-shot candidate by the media due to his lack of political experience and low name recognition. Key elements of Yang’s campaign were discussed in his book The War on Normal People, published in April 2018. During the first few months of 2019, Yang’s profile skyrocketed as he was featured on the massively popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience.
An enthusiastic internet following dubbed the “Yang Gang,” sprang up alongside Yang’s ascent to fame. Around $41.6 million was contributed to Yang’s campaign, with the bulk of the money coming in the last few months of his run. Yang was eligible for all six of 2019’s Democratic primary debates, and he took part in every one of them. Although Yang did not receive enough votes to be included in the seventh 2020 presidential debate, he was able to make it into and take part in the following year’s eighth debate.
According to Yang, one of the main reasons Trump was elected in 2016 was because of concerns about the loss of American jobs due to automation. Yang advocated a UBI of $1,000 per month, called the “Freedom Dividend,” to address this problem. His plan to replace several standard economic indicators with an “American Scorecard”—which he labeled “Human-Centered Capitalism”—was another central plank of his candidature.
In the beginning, Yang was for Medicare for All, but later he advocated for private health insurance to be kept. Yang advocated for democracy vouchers and ranked-choice voting as a means to counteract the influence of corporate financing in elections. With policies including a carbon tax and encouragement of nuclear power, Yang’s version of the Green New Deal would have helped lessen the world’s reliance on fossil fuels. In addition to these gun control measures, Yang advocated for the legalization of cannabis and the decriminalization of opiates, as well as for the protection of women’s and LGBT rights.
Andrew Yang is the CEO and creator of the nonprofit Venture for America, based in New York City. The organization’s mission is to foster economic growth and entrepreneurship by placing recent college graduates in businesses in underserved areas of the United States for a minimum of two years. In addition, he has written the book Intelligent People Ought to Construct Things.
We can identify the other candidates in Andrew Yang’s lane and his more general party opponents based on an ongoing series of national surveys we undertake. We haven’t collected enough data on Yang, who was just added to our surveys, to draw any firm conclusions at this time.
To determine the degree of overlap between the various voter bases for each candidate, INSIDER has been running a regular survey using SurveyMonkey Audience on a representative national sample. We inquire as to whether or not respondents are familiar with a candidate, whether they would be satisfied to have that person as the nominee, and whether or not they believe that person would be victorious in a general election against President Donald Trump.
