Elon Musk was born to a father from South Africa and a mother of Canada. He showed early computing and entrepreneurial talent. In 1988, Musk fled South Africa after getting a Canadian passport because he was reluctant to support apartheid by obligatory military service and because he was seeking larger business prospects in the United States. Musk was at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he was transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1992, where he graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Physics and Economics.
He studied physics at Stanford University in California, but left just after two days because he felt that the Internet had far more potential to influence society than science. In 1995 he launched Zip2, a startup that delivered online newspapers with maps and business directories.
In 1999 Zip2 was purchased for $307 million by Compaq and Musk created an online financial services company, X.com, which ultimately became PayPal, specialised in online money transfer. The online auction eBay purchased PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002. Musk had long been convinced that humanity must become a multiplanet species for life to endure. In 2002, he established Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) to make rockets more affordable.
A third missile, the Falcon Heavy (first in 2018), was meant to lift 117,000 pounds (53,000 kg) on orbit, almost twice as its biggest competitor, Boeing’s Delta IV Heavy, at a one-third price. SpaceX has announced Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy’s successor: the Super Heavy Starship system. The first stage Super Heavy would be able to lift 100,000 kg to low Earth.
The payload was the Starship, a spacecraft designed for rapid transport between cities on Earth and the Moon and Mars building bases. SpaceX has also created the spacecraft Dragon, which supplies the International Space Station (ISS). Astronauts can go to Dragon with as many as seven, and astronauts Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken had a crewed journey to the ISS in 2020. Musk intended to cut spaceflight costs by building a completely reusable missile that could lift off and revert to the pad from where it was launched.
Starting in 2012, the Grasshopper rocket of SpaceX made numerous brief flights to test the technology. As CEO of SpaceX, Musk also served as the chief designer of the Falcon, Dragon, and Grasshopper rockets. Musk had been interested in electric automobiles for a long time and became one of the biggest supporters in 2004 of Tesla Motors (later renamed Tesla), an electric car firm formed by the business owners Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Tesla launched its first automobile in 2006, the Roadster, which could travel 245 miles (394 km) at a single charge.
In contrast to most previous electric vehicles, which Musk regarded stodgy and interesting, it was a sports automobile which in less than four seconds could reach from 0 to 60 kilometres (97 mph) per hour. The initial public offering of the company amounted to over $226 million in 2010. Two years later Tesla presented a Model S car, which was praised for its performance and design by automobile critics. The brand was also honoured for its premium SUV Model X, which was launched in 2015.
The Model 3, a cheaper automobile, was launched in 2017. Musk had worries that Tesla was being sold publicly and in August 2018 he tweeted about privacy for Tesla, noting that he had “secured finance.” The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Musk for fraud in securities the following month and alleged that the tweets were “false and deceptive.”
Soon afterwards, the board of Tesla rejected the settlement recommended by the SEC, apparently because Musk had threatened to leave. However, the announcement sent Tesla shares down, and a tougher agreement was agreed in the end. Musk was President for three years, although he was allowed to continue as CEO. Unfulfilled with the projected cost (68 billion dollars) of California-based high speed rail system .
In 2013 Musk proposed an alternative faster system, the Hyperloop, a pneumatic tube in which, in 35 minutes at a top speed of 760 miles (1.220 kilometers) per hour, the 28-person pod would travel 350 miles (560 kilometres) between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Musk said that the Hyperloop cost just $6 billion, and that the system could accommodate the six million passengers that travel on the route each year with the pods leaving every two minutes on average. However, he indicated that he was not able to commit time to the development of Hyperloop between SpaceX and Tesla.
