James Smith is a sports broadcaster and a former mixed martial artist from the United States. Smith was born on September 2, 1977. Fight Quest, a television show that aired on the Discovery Channel and was co-hosted by him and Doug Anderson, was one of his previous endeavors. In addition to that, he has worked as a commentator for the following organizations in the past: Bellator, UFC, Premier Boxing Champions, and WWE’s Raw brand. In the years 2010–2011, he served as a host for the television show American Ninja Warrior. On September 2, 1977, Smith was brought into the world.
He had a background in wrestling and had taught at the high school level. When he was in college, he went to UCLA, but at that time, UCLA did not have a wrestling team. As a result, students who had wrestled in high school would gather at the Wooden Center to compete against one another. He was first exposed to Brazilian jiu-jitsu when, during one of their wrestling sessions, a BJJ instructor invited him to attend a class later that night at the same location. This is where he got his start in martial art.
Following his graduation, Smith began his training with Team Punishment. Smith intended to continue his education by attending graduate school at UCLA, but he was not accepted. He made the decision to compete professionally in mixed martial arts (MMA), and he accepted a fight with only two days’ notice at an unsanctioned regional event. He won the fight in just thirty seconds by armbar submission.
BIOGRAPHY:
He fought in a total of six mixed martial arts bouts and only dropped one of them. After learning that he would be hosting the show “Fight Quest” on the Discovery Channel, he made the decision to retire from competitive fighting. A week after his most recent bout, Smith was invited to an audition for Fight Quest, and he ended up getting the job. During its first two seasons, he co-hosted Fight Quest with Doug Anderson. The most recent broadcast was on October 3rd, 2008.
After Fight Quest, he got an email from Jerry Millen, who used to be the Vice President of Pride, inviting him to do an M-1 Global show in Amsterdam because they were in a pinch and needed a color commentator. Millen was aware of Fight Quest and sent a message to both Smith and Anderson, stating that the job was up for grabs for the person who could get back to him first. After he was successful in getting the job, he made the transition from mixed martial arts hosting to commentating on fights. After Bellator’s TV-deal agreements with Fox Sports Net, NBC, and Telemundo were finalized in 2010, Smith began serving as the color commentator for the organization’s second season of competition.
Smith began his role as host of American Ninja Warrior for its second season in the same year. Jonny Moseley took over co-hosting duties for the fourth season of American Ninja Warrior, which Smith had been doing up until the end of the third season. Premier Boxing Champions was broadcast on March 13, 2015, and Smith and Antonio Tarver, who is a former boxing champion, shared the duties of co-hosting the show. After a seven-year run with the company, Bellator announced on the 28th of December, 2017, that they had parted ways with Smith.
On the 12th of January 2018, Smith signed a contract with the UFC. Smith shared the news on the first of the new year that the UFC had decided not to renew his contract as a commentator. The news that Smith would be joining Invicta FC as a commentator was released on March 8th, 2019. Smith was promoted to the position of play-by-play commentator for Monday Night Raw on May 26, 2021, succeeding Adnan Virk in that role. On October 6, 2022, Smith made the announcement that he would be leaving WWE. Smith was trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu by Ricardo “Rey” Diogo, and he holds a black belt in the art.
