Brett William Brown is a professional American basketball trainer. Brown is a former college basketball player who served from 2013 to 2020 as Head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers. Brown was previously an assistant on Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs staff.
He also has vast coaching experience in Australia, being the leader of the National Basketball League’s North Melbourne Giants and Sydney Kings (NBL). Born and brought up in Maine, Brown played Rockland organized basketball, was a junior high school star guard, and then his father was chosen as head coach.
Brown transferred to South Portland where he became the South Portland High School outstanding basketball player from which he graduated in 1979. Brown was the first all-state guard for two years in 1978 and 1979, leading his team to a record of 27-0 and a State Class A title in his senior year.
The New England Basketball Hall of Fam is induced both by Brown and his father, Bob Brown, who was Southern Portland’s head coach during Brown’s play career. In 1988, when Brown coached Altos Auckland in New Zealand, he placed a cold call to Melbourne Tiger CEO Lindsay Gaze to finally make Australia his home for the next 18 years.
He remained as a Tigers assistant coach until he became the North Melbourne Giants head coach in 1993. Brown was voted the NBL Coach of the Year in 1994 as he led the Giants to the Adelaide 36 championship win.
BIOGRAPHY:
He served as the Giants’ head coach until 1998, before joining the San Antonio Spurs. After his brief spell, Brown trained the Sydney Kings between 2000 and 2002. Total in all, during 278 NBL games he was the head coach, winning 54 percent of the time.
Brown was offered a chance to succeed Mike Budenholzer as the top assistant of Gregg Popovich’s employees during the 2013 NBA off-season, but instead, in August 2013, he decided to become a head trainer of the Philadelphia seventy-six. He inherited the “complete rehabilitation” team led by the new CEO Sam Hinkie, and the Sixers only managed to separate Brown from the Spurs after a four-year guaranteed contract was offered.
After Mike Dunlap, his appointment turned him into the 24th head coach of franchise history and the second individual to be a head coach in the NBL and NBA. The Sixers were Brown’s first year’s youngest and one of the youngest teams in the League.
In the second half of season 2013-14, the Sixers would lose 26 matches in a row, setting the record for the longest NBA losing series. Michael Carter-Williams earned the 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and praised Brown for helping him win the Award and progress as a player.
Sixer Point Guard Michael Between 1995 and 2003, Brown served as an assistant cook for the Australia National Team for the 1998 FIBA World Championship and the Summer Olympics 1996 and 2000. In 2009, he was hired as the team’s head coach, which he held until 2012. In the 2010 FIBA World Championship, Australia finished 10th under Brown.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he guided Australia to a quarter-final in which the U.S. National Team who won the event were eliminated. Brown returned to Australia as head coach for Andrej Lemanis on November 27, 2019. He was slated to head the team at the Summer Olympics in 2020, but the COVID-19 epidemic was delayed until 2021.
Brown departed without leading the squad in a game on October 13, 2020. He highlighted the reasons for his leaving for his job instability following his firing from the 1976s and the challenges of traveling with his family because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
