Jan (Shirck) and Brad Scherzer reared Scherzer in Chesterfield, Missouri, where he was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals supporter. Parkway Central High School in his hometown was where he went to school and where he played baseball, football, and basketball. To compensate for any deficiencies in his athletic prowess, he displayed an unwavering desire to win. Rick Kirby, a high school basketball coach who emphasized fundamentals and defense, was one of his mentors.

After being scouted by Marty Maier, scouting director for the St. Louis Cardinals, he decided to take him in the 43rd round (1,291) of the 2003 MLB draught. However, he chose to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia instead of signing a contract. Missouri’s Tony Vitello was entrusted with helping Scherzer get recruited and eventually helped him improve his balance and control as well as quit leaping at hitters, which commonly resulted in Scherzer missing right-handed batters.

Scherzer’s “head whip” caused his cap to fall off frequently during his windup in his early baseball career. As his rookie season came to an end, he decided to focus on working out and doing long tosses rather than pitching. To improve his balance and avoid tripping over his front foot, Vitello and Tim Jamieson worked with him on a drill. Over the next winter, Scherzer tinkered with it and worked tirelessly, returning his sophomore year with a 1.86 earned-run average (ERA) and 131 strikeouts in 106 innings of work in 16 games.

His Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Award was given to him in 2005. As a result, Scherzer became Mizzou’s first-ever first-round draught pick in a major league baseball (MLB) season. On January 9, 2012, the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame revealed that Scherzer will be one of six new inductees. Both Erica May and Scherzer were pitchers for the University of Missouri, where they first met. Prior to being diagnosed with a heart condition, May was a pitcher for the Mizzou softball team.

When they finally tied the knot in November of 2013, the couple had two children and a boy. On November 29, 2017, they welcomed Brooklyn, their first child. In the afternoon of May 2, 2021, Scherzer and his wife gave birth to their third child, a son named Derek. This Northern Virginia family has put their home on the market for sale in 2020 despite the fact that they live in McLean, a suburb of Washington, DC. He bought a house in Jupiter, Florida, in the same year. As of 2017, the household had four rescue canines and two cats.
