Carroll Christopher Chambliss is a professional baseball player and coach from the United States of America. Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves were his teams in Major League Baseball from 1971 to 1988. For the Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners he was an assistant coach. As a rookie in 1971, he was named American League Rookie of the Year by the Indians.

A Yankees’ All-Star in 1976, he also hit the winning home run in that year’s ALCS. Both the 1977 and 1978 World Series championship teams of the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers and he won the Gold Glove Award in 1978 for his outstanding performance on defence.

During his junior college years, Chambliss played baseball at MiraCosta College. The Cincinnati Reds selected him in the 1967 and 1968 MLB Drafts, but he chose not to sign with them. To continue his baseball career at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), he transferred in 1969. Sein 15 home runs and 45 RBIs led the Bruins that season. The Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League, which won the National Baseball Congress (NBC) championship, were his college summer baseball team.

As part of the NBC tournament, Chambliss had a batting average of.583 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. In the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft, the Cleveland Indians selected Chambliss with the first overall pick, which was made in January.

This is the most advanced minor league baseball affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, the Wichita Aeros of the Class AAA American Association (AAA).  For giving up four pitching prospects in exchange for only two, and failing to land a starting second baseman, the Yankees have been criticised. A member of the 1976 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Chambliss played in the game.

To win the American League Championship Series against the Royals in 1977, Chambliss hit Mark Littell with a pitch in the fifth and final game.A two-run homer in Game 3 of the 1976 ALCS helped the Yankees win that game 5–3. He batted.524 (11-for-21) in the ALCS, with two home runs and eight RBIs. Chambliss batted.313 (5-for-16) with one RBI in the 1976 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds.

It was during this time that he helped lead the Yankees to their first World Series title since 1962 and won a Gold Glove for his outstanding fielding skills.A year later, the team traded Chambliss to the Toronto Blue Jays along with Damaso Garcia and Paul Mirabella for Rick Cerone, Tom Underwood and Ted Wilborn as part of the Rick Cerone, Tom Underwood and Ted Wilborn trade.

Cerone was expected to replace Thurman Munson as the starting catcher for the Yankees. They later traded Chambliss and Luis Gómez to the Atlanta Braves for prospects Barry Bonnell, Joey McLaughlin and Pat Rockett during the off-season. In 1980, he moved to Atlanta, where he remained until 1986. In 1988, he had one at-bat with the Yankees, and he struck out in that at-bat.

The at-bat earned him about $20,000, according to Lou Piniella, because he was paid the minimum player salary for the season after he was activated.)It wasn’t until 1989 that Chambliss took over as manager for Detroit Tigers’ Double-A London Tigers team of the Eastern League. The Labatt Park-based London Tigers won the Eastern League championship in 1990. The Sporting News named Chambliss Minor League Manager of the Year in 1992. In addition to playing for the Yankees, Chambliss served as the team’s hitting coach from 1977 through 2000.
