Bonds became a free agent in 1992 and signed with the San Francisco Giants, with whom he would go on to post record-breaking seasons for the rest of his professional baseball career. The season ended with 73 home runs, topping Mark McGwire’s previous mark of 70 home runs set in 1998. On October 5, he broke McGwire’s record of 70 home runs. It was speculated that Bonds may have used performance-enhancing drugs after Bond’s personal trainer pleaded guilty to distribution of banned steroids in 2005; however, Bonds testified before a grand jury in 2003 that he had never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs or received injections from his personal trainer.
Bonds hit his 756th home run on August 7, 2007, against Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik in San Francisco, surpassing Hank Aaron’s previous career-high of 755 home runs. Bonds’ professional baseball career came to an end at the end of the season when the Giants decided not to renew his contract. He remained a free agent for the rest of the season and, although he did not officially retire, his professional baseball career came to an end. During a grand jury hearing in 2003, he was indicted and charged with perjury and obstruction of justice.
He was found guilty in November 2007. When the obstruction of justice charges was brought against Bonds in April 2011, the jury was unable to make a decision on the perjury allegations against him. He was eventually sentenced to 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation, and community service. During the 2015 season, Bonds were hired as the hitting instructor for the Miami Marlins but was sacked after only one season with the organization. Later in his career, he worked as a special adviser to the Giants’ chief executive officer.
